Of course they do this right after trying to kill adblock.
After? Have they stopped?
Some solutions:

LibreTube and self-hosted Piped server is working really well for me. I only wish SmartTubeNext (or another Chromecast GTV client) would use Piped as well.
LibreTube and self-hosted Piped server is working really well for me.
I use the same stuff, it’s awesome.
Once again, it leaves me in awe of just how much power we can get from FOSS.
FOSS/FLOSS is all about empowering users and allowing them to do whatever they want, whereas proprietary software tries to take power away from the user. It’s kinda sad that many people don’t understand this.
Revanced is still a thing
But it requires you to use the proprietary YouTube app that collects and sells all of your data
Yeah that’s fair enough. Are there any free as in freedom solutions that allow you to sync progress through videos on multiple devices? If I’m watching some long video over multiple days it’s really convenient to easily switch it between all my devices, and have it automatically continue where I left off
Web solutions allow you to have an account and can keep track of those things. There are Android apps like Clipious that connect to the web instsnces so it keeps in sync with what you watch on your browser.
Does it collect data from your phone if you’re not signed in to the yt account through revanced?
It’s very likely
Also for iOS is uYou+, installed with Sideloadly. Might not be as privacy-friendly as other options though
Might not be as privacy-friendly as other options though
That’s why I didn’t put it on the list. Also, sideloading on iOS is just a terrible experience. You either need to connect your phone to a computer every 7 days, otherwise your sideloaded apps will become unusable, or you can pay Apple $100/year for a developer subscription, so you can use your already overpriced device the way you want to. The best option is to avoid the problem entirely and get an Android phone, preferably a Google Pixel, and then install GrapheneOS on it and sideload F-Droid and LibreTube. This gives you actual freedom, as well as the highest levels of privacy and security you can get on a smartphone.
Just wanted to mention it in case others wanted the same experience as the official app. Sideloadly and AltStore both auto-renew over WiFi, so other than the slightly involved setup it’s just like any other app. I agree with you though, GrapheneOS/Android or the other options your listed are far better in terms of privacy and security
Not listing Revanced here should put you straight to jail
also on Desktop, using SMplayer (admits YT and most other streaming platforms, pasting the URL in > Open > URL In the browser ypu can also watch YT without ads and without YT detecting the adblocker, using this script (Firefox use the Tampermonkey or Greasymonkey extensión, in Vivaldy download the script to a folder and drag it to the extensions page in developer mode)- It put tje Video in a iFrame, with this the YouTube Adblock detector run below this layer without detecting anything.
You can also use VLC or mpv. IINA is a good option for macOS.
I know, I used the VLC before as mediaplayer, it’s very good, but the SMplayer is better, I think, Do the same, but with an cleaner UI and way easier to handle.Even eith plug-ins, eg to search direct ly YT videos, among others. It is is the graphic interface of the MPlayer and the mpv engine.
I prefer mpv because the SMplayer user interface is horrible IMO
Well, question of taste, anyway don’t matter, they do the same. Try also this one (also FOSS), works wonderfully well and blazing fast.
Louis Rossman has pushed a media player called Grayjay, open source and has subscription implementation across youtube, twitch, and more
I know, Grayjay is on the list. I don’t use it myself though, I prefer LibreTube for Android and Piped on desktop.
I really thought they would wait a little longer after the Adblock crackdown. Oh well, Grayjay to the rescue!
Of all the streaming platforms I’ll never pay for, YouTube is the one I’ll never pay for the most.
I’m right there with you all the way. My wallet will never have a Google hole. Not for YouTube premium or music or storage or whatever else they are thinking of selling me that is not a physical product. I probably won’t buy anything physical from them either such as a Chromebook or a pixel phone because they are the most evil company in the world today.
There’s plenty of competirion for the most evil, but Google has certainly proven not to be trustworthy.
I know it’s maybe not a great replacement for everyone, but this crap is why I stopped using YouTube and just use Peertube now.
Another nice Desktop client (FOSS), which works very well, no ads and not only for YT
MotionBox accesses and aggregates videos via the VBML language.
It supports DuckDuckGo, BitTorrent, TMDB, Youtube, Dailymotion, Vimeo, Twitch, TikTok, Facebook, Odysee, PeerTube, Last.fm and SoundCloud.
All of this inside multiple tabs and without ever showing an ad.
YT without ads also in the Vivaldi Feed Reader
