I spent ~2 seconds looking for a post on this topic, and didn’t see one, so if I missed it, that’s on me.

A lot of people seem to be up in arms about Meta moving into the fediverse via a rumored twitter competitor called “Project 92”. Obviously, this is more of a problem for mastodon than Lemmy, but since everything is connected here, it seems worth addressing.

So what is the FMHY position on this whole thing?

My take is that they we shouldn’t allow them to get close to the fediverse because there’s no way that they are doing this for good of the users. I will go as far as saying that we shouldn’t federate with them. I’m probably a minority with that take.

I might not even be from this instance, but I do agree that this probably will just bring spam to Lemmy and that federating with them would probably be detrimental.

If nothing else, I tend to agree with one of the arguments that an instance made recently: “meta federating will bring in billions of users and we will not be able to moderate it when it touches our instance”

That sounds pretty reasonable, and although I do think that you inherently need quite a few users for something like Lemmy to work, you don’t really need that many, so federating with them would really only cause problems.

If someone from an unfederated instance wanted to access this community, they could just create an account on it or a federated instance; it’s not like it’s uncommon to make alts (or new accounts in general). Overall I just think it would lead to more spam content and moderation issues on FMHY.

They’re known for spying on you and I’m willing to bet my head that that’s what they will do, it’s facebook and it will always be facebook, no matter the name or platform.

Yeah, I know, but it’s possible it could drive more users to the fediverse- for example, if they federate, then try to monetize their platform in such a way that users drift away to other instances to avoid ads or what-have-you.

We don’t need to federate with them for them to make fediverse more known and attract users to us. That’s what I think at least.

While I get the concerns, I think it’s premature to make a decision based on rumours alone when we don’t even know how it works and when it will be released. For all we know it might be years before it gets released and fediverse could be completely different by then.

There will probably be intense discussion once it is announced, that would be the time to look closely on how it works and make a decision.

distributed communities take a very long time to come to consensus. by talking about it now, we have a lot of options laid out, arguments made, and positions relatively established (and then time to have those positions at the back of our minds, to temper with age) which can be referred back to when meta actually releases

this way there’s no mad rush, less fragmentation (there will probably be 2 or 3 ways of responding, but not 1000 different half-baked responses, and probably less emotion

Thanks for the reasonable take. I feel like there’s a ton of FUD on this topic. Aside from them using the protocol, there’s no real indication that this will affect us at all.

I would consider this the first steps to attempting to privatize the platform. They join, bring their fun, change the rules, then take over. They want in on the free data we create, and the fastest way to do that would be to federate. Bonus points if they can match your profile to your Facebook profile.

For me I just won’t interact with it, but the techs free. So it’s understandable they’d use it. Try to get their cr somehow off the ground lol
