It’s a shame that Spain can’t come to some sort of arrangement like the UK, where we could have teams representing Catalonia, the Basque Country and perhaps even Galicia. I’m sure, if paid enough bribe money, both UEFA and FIFA would find it in their hearts to allow that due to some obscure bylaws.

I was randomly thinking about Catalan potential independence the other day, how would that work for a club like Barça? Would they play in a new Catalan League, with the biggest adversaries being Espanyol and Girona? The end of the classico would definitely be something.

From a purely footballing perspective I would prefer a UK style solution for Spain. This would allow a greater number of the talented players from that country to shine on an international stage. As things stand, I’m fairly confident that both Catalonia and the Basque Country could field national teams strong enough to regularly play at the Euros or the World Cup, much like Scotland have historically and Wales have more recently.

I guess if we add the political aspect to it (Catalonia is a country in that scenario), then it would require more of a Monaco-like solution, but then people would argue that Catalonia and Monaco aren’t really the same size

Well, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are nations within a state (union), as were Austria and Hungary historically. Unfortunately I don’t think Spain is in the mood to consider that amount of decentralisation.
