In the spirit of Lemmy/federation giving more power to the users. I want to let the users of this community vote on our first candidate for a new mod. This is a little risky because there has not been much time for community to form, but I think its a chance to set a good precedence.
Voter information
The candidate for a new mod: lemmy.world/u/forkball
My arguments for adding them as a mod:
- Assuming its the same person, reddit.com/u/forkball was an active reddit user since 2011. And from briefly scanning their history on reddit and Lemmy, they seem like a good level headed person. I think they would be a good mod, but the voice of the community is what matters.
- I have no mod experience and was always a complete reddit lurker, so it would be good to have a very active community member as a mod.
My arguments for not adding them:
- Y’all are chill and not causing a lot of work for me. So at this instant I can handle the work load. Not sure how long that will last though.
How to place a vote
I hope to avoid bots so voting will take some effort.
To place a vote you must comment on this post (I wont count nested comments). Your comment must begin with “YES:” or “NO:” followed by no less than 4 words justifying your vote.
Votes must be submitted before June 29 at 06:00 UTC.
If we have more YES votes than NO votes, u/forkball will become a mod.
Here are examples of valid voting comments: “YES: because forkball both showers and thinks!” “NO: because they didn’t give me an up doot”
Fineprint
Lemmy and moderating is still new to me so if this ends up being a really dumb move on my part for some reason I cannot foresee, I reserve the right to bail on this idea and try another method for community input. Things would need to get really nuts for me to bail on this vote.
I don’t expect a huge number of votes, but if im wrong, it may take some time to tally the votes.
Edits
- It seems implied, but only one vote per username. Feel free to report duplicates. I will also try to publish the counted votes so people can validate my tally.
YES: Mostly because I want to see if this method of avoiding bots works.
YES: They’re motivated and it’s better to have a backup in case one mod is unavailable.
Yes: We will need more mods, we are only behaving because we are distracted, the chaos will come. 😊
YES: even if the community is chill now, you don’t know what can happen, look at bots currently trying to invade lemmy for example, getting help before problems could occur is always a good thing, better safe than sorry IMO.
NO: not necessary if your workload doesn’t require a second moderator and you haven’t acquired proof that this is the same person
YES: because forkball both showers and thinks!
Tes, 'cause it sounds good to me
Just so you know, this wont count as a vote. it either needs to start with “YES:” or “NO:”. Without that i dont know if you think u/forkball as a mod “sounds good to me” or maybe you just think holding a vote “sounds good to me”
@vatlark Have you tried reaching out to the mods of the reddit showerthoughts and seeing if they’re interested in resuming operations over here? Based on the community picture I assumed this and the reddit variant were the same.
YES: because forkball was a strong member of the reddit community and from their comment history seems to think for themselves.
Is there a way you could make the Reddit forkball user upload/write something innocuous in Reddit, that you request the lemmy forkball user to write - to establish credibility?
I don’t think they’re the same user, did this u/forkball say they are? They write differently, on different topics/teams, and honestly the reddit one seemed fairly grumpy. I say if a person seems decent and isn’t a bot let em try and we can always register our complaints if needed.
i didn’t ask, so I will now
Hey guys, I am not u/forkball on reddit. I’m u/tottspot. Will make a post over there to verify. Just have an interest in getting involved in modding and offered to help. I consider myself a team player and have been a lurker at r/showerthoughts for years and wanted to get more involved over here. Cheers!
A verification comment needs to provide proof that this account is the same person that owns that account
Usually by saying I am forkball on redditor or linking your lemmy profile
You also need a screen recordinglinked in your reddit verification comment that shows proof that you are logged into this account
Id not suggest screenshots since photoshop is a thing and I’d suggest recording your phone or computer with another device if possible waving your hand in front of it
That is sufficient and verifiable evidence since a in person meet can’t be established because you don’t know each other personally
