Just months ago, Carney’s party was headed for a potentially historic drubbing. It was not yet clear whether the Liberals would rule a minority or majority government as votes continued to be counted.

You’re not wrong, they still won’t learn how to be more progressive. They just learned that sliding right a little here and there will win them even more voters, especially if the conservatives keep shooting themselves in the foot.
But that strategy is doomed to fail, eventually. It’s the same strategy the democrats are employing in the US. They just lost to trump first.
