I don’t think these are ever ultimately difficult to cross if undefended. The point is to stop them long enough to push them back so they can’t undo it.
The point is its over an extended length so they can’t just immediate cross somewhere, you get time to stop them.
I bet now that Russia failed to defend this spot, they’ll have to try and close it, which will divert resources and let Ukraine try and open another spot as well.
