This post is for voting on /c/rage’s Lemmyvision 2 song nomination.

Over the past few weeks, our community has submitted nominations, and we have until April 1 to pick a winner. Our Lemmyvision representative, @Gorgritch_umie_killa, has delegated our election to an independent agency, the Aussie.zone Eureka Commission (AEC).

Anyone who has recently commented a few times on aussie.zone before today is allowed to vote. (This includes, for example, some quokk.au users and various Australian Lemmy users on other instances)

This election uses preferential Instant-Runoff Voting[wiki] just like our federal elections. Put simply, this means that if your [1] choice has no chance of election, your vote then runs over to your [2] choice, and so on, so there’s no disadvantage in picking an unpopular song you love for your first votes, your vote is not ‘wasted’ at all. Vote sincerely.

A couple of the nominations weren’t released during 2024, we’ve received confirmation from the organiser that they’re allowed!

Here are the entries. Please listen to them all before voting:

Here is the ballot template for you to fill in. Copy and paste it as a new reply to this post, and number ALL boxes from 1 to 10 in order of your choice. [1] is your first preference, [10] is your last preference.

It’s funny, I’ve always wanted TISM to represent Oz in Eurovision, however this song is way to Aussie specific for me to vote it highly this time.

I know what you mean, they’ve always been a group which, on paper, seem like peak Eurovision - playful, performative (two of their members didn’t even play instruments or sing), a midpoint of indie and pop, and plenty of their songs have enough originality and depth to make me want to listen again and again. This song just didn’t feel like a hit to me, it was the tamer side of their formula - it had their core themes (pop rock style, yob sports nostalgia, extrapolating Australian layman culture to deeper ideas, existentialism and angst) but none of them strong enough to stand above the other candidates here.

Also doesn’t help that the song appeals most to 50+ year olds who grew up in the AFL-playing states.

Yeah, same. I probably should have nominated Old School TISM (the other song they released in the eligibility period) instead or as well. It probably wouldn’t have been voted much higher, though. It’s more meta, but less obscure - though the idea of sending a song so totally opaque beyond a specific demographic as '70s Football was also funny to me.

Haha, genuine giggles! I think the AEC had better trademark the colour ‘eureka red’ before partisan actors start using it to misrepresent how to votes.

I love that logo as well!

Now comes the hard part! Deciding my favs, i’m finding it genuinely hard this year, theres four songs i’ve really liked and listened to quite a bit now.

Good news about San Cisco for @Nath@aussie.zone

Good news about San Cisco for @Nath@aussie.zone

Haha! I’m not exactly a massive fan or anything. I had just heard of them thanks to a previous thread (I think in here?) about JJJ Like a version and loved their Daft Punk cover. That got me looking more into their music and through that I knew about this song. It probably got higher on my vote card than it should have since I’ve nominated it. It’s a decent enough song, but not their best by any means. I love that it was filmed at Atlantis - an old Perth amusement park from my childhood. But that won’t mean much to people born after 1990 or outside of Perth. If Awkward had been released in the past year, it’d be the perfect song to send.

I don’t thinks its San Cisco’s best either, but its pretty good.

But its so interesting, i showed a german coworker the song, and she really liked it, so i played more of San Cisco’s well known songs, and she actually went back to ‘Under the Light’ as her favourite.

They were definitely hard to place, especially considering how varied they are in their strengths - some are instrumentally straight-forward but lyrically complex and thematically challenging while others are compositionally exciting and lyrically just simple pop-y fun. It’s hard to rank both apples and oranges, especially when so many were great overall.

I think the AEC had better trademark the colour ‘eureka red’ before partisan actors start using it to misrepresent how to votes.

Luckily, The Wiggles didn’t bring out their Big Red Car this time.

This has been my experience entirely. Nine out of ten songs in the list were completely new to me, so I’ve had a playlist of them and I’ve been trying to devote time to listening to it. But it’s been hard - lots going on in my world at the moment.

I liked the theme and composition of the Gurridyula song for example, but musically found it boring. I put Tom Cardy at #1 because it’s fun and the most Eurovision-ish song on the list, but it doesn’t look like many people liked it much. It’ll be interesting to see how the vote comes out.

The numbers tell another story! I’ve started practicing the vote count, and that song is currently the runner up (your ballot gave it a second primary vote, pushing it above U Should Not Be Doing That and International on equal 3rd place).

If we tally up preferences instead, so that our #1 gets 10 points, #2 gets 9 points, etc. (‘Borda count’ method) then the Cha Cha Cha is now up to 2nd place with 49 out of a possible 70 points (equal 3rd are Boundaries and U Should Not Be Doing That on 42 points each).

    33 - International
    21 - Friends of Dorothy
    18 - '70s Football

    Other observations:

    https://www.condorcet.vote/Vote/AEA9DC099A/

From the river to the sea was a Condorcet winner (would win in a one-on-one race against each other opponent). There was no Condorcet loser; International, '70s Football and Friend of Dorothy had a scissors-paper-rock stalemate going on.

International was the most controversial. It scored 33 out of a possible 70 in the Borda count (averaging a preference of #5) while managing to earn a #1 vote, a #3 vote and two #10 votes.

    Everyone preferred:

    • From the river to the sea over I HATE RICH CUNTS and '70s Football
    • Transcendental Cha Cha Cha over Friend of Dorothy and '70s Football

Woah! @eureka@aussie.zone that is so detailed! 😂

I reckon, yhanks to your work here, Aussie Zone must win the competition for most detailed competition for an Instance’s nomination!

I rind it interesting how many rounds with no movement there were in the end.

I think we’ve hit on a really great and original song for the winner though. I’d never heard of Gurridyula before this. And i bet with a name like “From the River to the Sea” there hasn’t been much radio airtime for it. But the lyrics alone are really fuckin Good!

My pleasure! I know it was a bit over-the-top but I’m glad aussie.zone took it and had a good time. Plus, hey, hopefully someone here learned a bit more about our election system. Definitely the most detailed poll of the lot!

Apart from the upcoming election, some of my interest came from learning about different voting systems a few years ago, Nicky Case made a fun interactive Explorable Explanation of different voting systems and their perks a few years back. Luckily we had a clear winner, but if that wasn’t the case, using a preferential system would have helped us pick a nomination that most people were happy with, and push people away from the ‘tactical voting’ we see overseas with First Part The Post systems.

I rind it interesting how many rounds with no movement there were in the end.

I was surprised when I saw it too. Since there were only 7 votes and two clear standouts, most songs had no primary votes, so the computer program dutifully went through the motions of eliminating them one by one and handing all of their 0 votes to no-one.

I think we’ve hit on a really great and original song for the winner though. I’d never heard of Gurridyula before this. And i bet with a name like “From the River to the Sea” there hasn’t been much radio airtime for it. But the lyrics alone are really fuckin Good!

Same here, I hadn’t heard of them. It’s no surprise to anyone that I find its messages relatable and purposeful, but even putting that completely aside, the internal rhyme/assonance, flow and wordplay are very skilled from a poetry perspective, without getting cryptic in the process (contrast with something like MF Doom’s Figaro - lyrical technique mastery but I only understand about half of it). I would completely understand if people voted against it because it’s musically limited (backbeat is fine for its purpose but not impressive, the vocal performance has a fair amount of dynamic but isn’t bloody Take On Me, and at the end of the day I wouldn’t listen to an instrumental version of the song) but on the other hand, I’d take a lyrically deep song over vapid catchy pop hits any day.

And, of course, thanks for letting me run this fun experiment!
