As an American, just know that you have nothing to apologize for, and our embarrassment is much worse.
If only the laws worked the way they do now (and my dad was still alive), I’d be getting my Irish citizenship and sharing your much milder embarrassment.
My dad would have been able to do it, then I could have. My grandfather was first generation, so I can’t unfortunately. My dad passed a few years ago due to ALS, so I’m SoL on that.

You can get it with proof of Irish parents or grandparents.
