Summary
Hungary’s parliament passed a law banning Pride events and allowing facial recognition to identify and fine attendees.
The legislation, backed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s party, passed 136-27 and expands Hungary’s “child protection” law, which restricts LGBTQ+ content. Amnesty International condemned it as a “full-frontal attack” on LGBTQ+ rights.
Critics argue Orbán is scapegoating minorities to distract from economic issues and boost far-right support ahead of elections.
Budapest Pride organizers vowed to proceed with their march despite fines of up to 200,000 forints (£425).
So those vote counts… The whole Orban thing… Sounds like it’s kinda most of the whole country? As opposed to US being more 50/50?
Or is there subtext I’m unaware of?
Despite the 2/3 majority in parliament, the actual vote head counts were closer to a 45/55 (or 48/52, depending on the source) at the last few elections. This is due to severe gerrymandering, excessive propaganda, oppressing opposition and independent media outlets, and intentionally cutting education funds.
But I’m also both saddened and infuriated by the fact that while it’s not the majority, still, HALF of the fucking country still supports this vile, hateful, corrupt, literally evil government.
I guess there’s no hope for the country, and it will soon devolve into another Belarus.
