Can’t wait until the conservative politicians quote this statistic to raise the retirement age… again.
So if you start your work life at 16 and retire at 67, that will give you 51 years working, 14,5 years in retirement and 16 years as a child. That is the “best” case here in Germany, most people won’t work that long, other countries have lower retirement ages and many people are doing additional schooling and university. But even that means that you have to put away / pay into retirement fund 14,5/51 = 28% of your income during your work life to support your retirement.
Only because Glasgow isn’t in the stats anymore.
But are they aging healthily? I work in a healthcare setting and there are so many 70-somethings that are barely functioning. I’d rather have a 75 year expectancy but with a high level of health (which includes independence and function) than add 10 years of poor health and constant care just to die miserable.
I’d rather agree to take a pill at 75 and have the means to enjoy retirement prior to that. At least in the UK we’re soon to get the right to die. I’d like to arrange to opt out in advance if I get dementia - that’s cruel and can go on a long time.
This will drop off again with climate desasters and wars to come. The Boomers and Gen X will see most of the benefits of the technical advances, without seeing most of the consequences.
My grandma died at 89 last month.
If the idiot white-wingers didn’t smash the health budget she might still be with us. Maybe the nurses wouldn’t be so overwork they let her die of anemia.
I don’t understand the comma in the title of the article
Instead of the comma there should be a colon. It’s not the life expectancy of the European Union, but of it’s residents.
That photo has serious meme potential. Invest!

Great news! Let’s make it to 88!
Did you choose this number on purpose?
Where we are going, we don’t need roads.
It is the second highest life expectancy before Monaco’s 90.
Soon to be median age in EU. Plastic surgeons tightening those dry clams are making a fortune.
yeah who wouldn’t want to spend the last 20 endless years of your shitty life in a for-profit “retirement home”.
