This is my favourite poem by Dutch poet Hans Andreus. Here’s the English translation:

For a day of tomorrow

If I die tomorrow,

Tell the trees

How much I loved you.

Tell the wind,

That climbs the towers

Or falls from the branches,

How much I loved you.

Tell it to a child

That is young enough to understand it.

Tell it to an animal,

Perhaps only by just looking at it.

Tell it to the stone houses,

Tell it to the city

How much I loved you.

But don’t tell any person,

They wouldn’t believe you.

They wouldn’t want to believe that

Just a man

Just a woman

That a person loved another person so much

Like I loved you.
