BlueSky is open source. The web site, the mobile apps, it’s all on GitHub.

The one part of their infrastructure that’s not open is the discover feed. BlueSky claims they have to keep that secret in order to prevent it being manipulated if it was known what it promotes. Kinda sketchy, but the feed is optional and can be replaced with fully open alternatives.

The more important factor holding it back from being as open as, say, Mastodon, is that it is prohibitously expensive to host due to its content indexing system. If you had the financial backing to support setting up another instance, you could.

Ultimately though, that’s what causes the same Caesar issue for BlueSky, at least right now. You can’t take your business elsewhere within the “BlueSky fediverse” because nobody else is offering to host. Getting on board with their federated system requires that you optimistically hope that somebody else will step up if this Caesar goes bad, which is a huge gamble.

Sure because they’re sponsored by billionaire and they’re saying there is not Caesar in their platform. They can say whatever they want to attract users and money so when billionaire get bored they can run ads or harves users for AI.

Their technology is rooted by design but they try hard to explain it’s not. Like

"users could just leave — without losing their identity or data.”

But Jay there is no place to go.

      “You can really build anything,”

Yeah sure, if you’re homeless just buy land and build home but remember it needs to be as big as ours.

“The key to what we’re doing is shifting power back to users and developers,”

No you’re shifting to open core, your patron Jack is using it’s power to influence media to give attention to Bluesky as alternative to pursue his dream. It’s not people’s dream. It’s Jack dream. At some point some financial advisor will say to Jack. We hit enough users to change ToS given that 20% users will leave we’re still fine and will make profit. Just by profiling they can do it. They have all the data in one place so they can do whatever they want.

But it’s just people who believe that Bluesky is a good boy.

This is assuming that they don’t just turn off federation when they enshittify. They just need to claim it costs them money for a feature that nobody uses, would be trivial.

A federation that is only federated in theory is not federated.
