The problem with believing society always progresses is that you must also believe that reason always wins the power struggle, which I’m too sure is true these days.

    Stable economies literally enable stupid people to succeed without needing pesky things like literacy or education.

    In other words, coddled babies who are willing to tear down things they don’t understand because they don’t like being told what to do.

    And no, I don’t mean poor stupid people. I mean wealthy stupid people. It’s become increasingly clear that a significant number of the people running the damn planet are deeply uneducated and their massive wealth has insulated them from any consequences of being an absolute nimrod.

      Unstable economies allow that too. In fact, I’d argue it’s more likely for people to be deceived and make concessions when they perceive a threat or a big problem that they feel requires urgent measures. Many times dictators have imposed themselves in times of struggle, using excuses like the need for special power for a strong and well coordinated response.
