According to some recently-resurfaced videos of a July 2023 Santana concert in Atlantic City, New Jersey, frontman Carlos Santana stopped in-between songs to give a spiel condemning transgender people.
Article by Consequence of Sounds reporting on Carlos Santana outing himself as a transphobe
Why seems there to be an age gap, like 50 or something, when transphobia seemingly increases. I know there are younger ones too, but still. Was it the lead paint and pipes used in the 70s? It’s bizarre why they hate such a simple thing.
Culture of the times and getting set in their way. The younger ones learning from their elders. I had a cousin that came out a lesbian in the early 00’s and it rippled through family. When he decided to transition to male in the late 00’s it caused a major ripple in the family. The gender fluid concept is something that while it’s been around scientifically for awhile… is a culture shock to some.
Worlds changed a lot since the 70s in some ways, less so in others
Last few generations each started accepting different types of people that the previous generation didn’t, some stopped evolving pass that point.
It went something like
POC > LGB > T > genders
I know people of my generation mostly don’t have an issue with trans but some can’t understand the concept of other types of genders. When talking to my aunt that’s 10 years older than me she has a hard time understand trans but she would never question gay rights, when talking to my young cousins they learn about gender acceptance in school now…
At the same time, I talk to my mother who’s a last year boomer and she’s like “Whatever float your boat, as long as you’re happy with who you are then I’m happy for you!”
There was a trans positive Love Boat episode and Christine Jorgensen back in the 70s. So the acceptance was there, but the religious right had to fuck it all up.

My guess is leaded gasoline. Put so much of that into the air that it addled their minds.
Doesn’t seem to be stopping young Americans from voting for Republicans.
I mean - it’s a valid point

I wonder how mainstream the acceptance was at that point compared to the 2000s though…
