It wasn't just Counter-Strike: Source and Day of Defeat: Source that received big updates today, as Valve also published a new update for Team Fortress 2 along with updating the Source SDK to include TF2!
I haven’t been happy about TF2 since they added hats and bullshit. I don’t want progress or lootbox bullshit. I just want to fire up the game and be on even footing with everybody.
That said, good for the folks who enjoy that stuff. It’s always been a pretty fun game. Played it off and on for probably close to a decade. Maybe I’ll fire it up again and wander around trying to figure out what they’ve done with all the maps I actually know.
None of the new weapons are objectively better then stock, they’re all sidegrades (except for maybe the crusader’s crossbow for medic because the stock syringe gun sucks)
That sounds about right. I don’t think I’ve picked it up in close to ten years. Not much before that since hats. But there was a time I lived on that game.
ETA: I didn’t realize it was such a brief span of time. 2007-2009, but I played almost every day, so I guess it felt like forever. I picked it back up every now and again with longer times between and briefer stints playing each time.
Still have a soft spot for the game, I just don’t like lootbox gear. I’d rather look at team comps and pick a class having a good idea what I’m in for based on the map and the mix of classes on both sides. Having gear that makes e.g. snipers better vs. scouts screws with that.
I don’t remember all the exact details, but I go back to my original point: I prefer to play when everyone is on the same ground other than skill and experience.
Flat out have never played them. It’s like this: if a game doles stuff out to give you a chance to learn new systems or tactics that doesn’t bother me. That’s normally a single player thing.
In multiplayer I don’t like unlocks. And I’ve always avoided games that seemed like that’s what they did. I was really upset about the Star Wars BF game a few years ago. So wanted to play that but I’m not going to put several dozens of hours into a game in order to just play what I want to play.

If you really don’t like them, there’s a mod you can install that removes everyone’s hats and cosmetics.
The cosmetics aren’t the problem. It’s the stuff that actually changes stats/abilities.

So since 2009? You haven’t been happy with TF2 for over 15 years.

what’s your opinion on games like call of duty/ battle field where you unlock guns/tacticals as you progress?

You should look into TF2 Classic
I had no idea this was a thing. I’m 100% going to look into this!
You still are? The hats are cosmetic, they don’t do anything.
