Pete Hegseth, speaking to defence ministers at a lunchtime meeting in Brussels, said Europe had to provide “the overwhelming share” of future military aid to Kyiv – and recognise that restoring Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders was unrealistic.
The Pentagon chief said he was “here today to directly and unambiguously express that stark strategic realities prevent the United States of America from being primarily focused on the security of Europe”, though the language was notably toned down from a draft briefed in advance to the press.
That had said the US was no longer “the primary guarantor of security in Europe” and appeared to suggest a recasting of the 75-year-old Nato alliance, created after the second world war to protect western Europe from the Soviet bloc.
First of all, this is a horrible move.
Second, this means we’re drastically reducing US Defense spending and putting that money into free healthcare for our population, right?
Trumps massive tax cuts for the rich from his first term are almost ending, he needs a lot of money to renew them.
The trump tax cuts for the rich were in the form of commercial taxation. Those were permanent and aren’t ending. The rich get their cuts by reduction in corporate taxes in the form of dividends or increased stock value of the companies they hold.
The tax cuts for the middle class are the temporary ones that are ending.
Well, sort of.
Except we’ll probably see increased spending directed towards Anduril and the like, as well as putting the money we didn’t save into the pockets of billionaires anyways, and then cut even more public funding because “how will we pay for all this 🥴”
