Summary

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican, has not lowered flags to half-staff at county buildings following former President Jimmy Carter’s death, despite President Biden’s federal order for a 30-day observance.

Blakeman has not provided a reason, drawing criticism from Democratic officials, including legislator Seth Koslow, who called the decision partisan and disrespectful.

Carter, who died at 100 on December 29, will lie in state January 7-9 before a state funeral on January 9.

I grew up in Nassau County. It (and the rest of Long Island) are way more conservative than you’d expect given the proximity to NYC. But that’s not unusual in New York, most cities are staunchly blue, but the suburbs and rural areas red.
