Summary

Russian authorities fined at least seven people in Tula for “looking too gay” during a nightclub raid in February, with charges based on “promoting non-traditional sexual relations” through their clothing.

This crackdown reflects Russia’s broader push to enforce “traditional values,” including tightening anti-LGBT laws and banning LGBT “propaganda” across all age groups.

Judges ruled that outfits like corsets, fishnet tights, and dyed hair violated the law.

In 2024, at least 71 people were fined under these laws, which critics view as escalating discrimination against the LGBT community.

Literally the worst timing. Considering the gay erotica authors being imprisoned. But tankies gotta rev up that misinformation engine of course.

It’s fucked up that Russia is doing shit like this. That said,

he was wearing a short top covering his chest, black leather shorts above the knee, on which there were several chain-shaped ornaments, and fishnet tights

That is pretty gay. Doesn’t at all deserve persecution, but certainly fits the bill.

I don’t know man. It feels like pigeonholing somebody’s sexual preferences based on the style of their clothing might not be accurate.

Take a look at this photo of Mötley Crue from back in the day, and those guys were renowned for their heterosexuality.

I don’t understand how this flaming dude’s attire breaks a law about “promoting non traditional relations”. This is just dressing up, not doing propaganda.

The Russian oligarchs clearly thought it promoted a desire within them for some kind of relations.

I mean, the way you dress isn’t really connected to sexuality. It may be somewhat connected to gender presentation (not gender overall, but the way society interprets gender through presentation), but gender and sexual preference are not directly connected either. I dress fairly feminine at times, including exposed bras, fishnets, and dyed hair, but I’m not really interested in men.

It’s paywalled, so I can only assume that this:

Judges ruled that outfits like corsets, fishnet tights, and dyed hair violated the law.

Only applies to men, because I’m guessing the authorities wouldn’t think she was too gay:

So when do they arrest the cops and people complaining who all openly admitted to feeling aroused?

They should wear what used to be worn in the 19th century in the Russian imperial court and call it patriotism.

I definitely look “too straight”. So I should get that money paid to my accounts.
