I thought only sub machines used that kind of bolt coking mechanism. Cool!! Does it work better or mostly similar to gas/piston operated mechanisms in rifles (high quantities of powder)?

Tl; dr - It works across the board in any chambering afaik, delayed recoil operation is delayed recoil operation. MP5 is still GOATed if dummy expensive to make in comparison.

The hyper-nuance is that it ‘feels’ better than most other operating methods (especially for pistol caliber SMGs) due to it not having a ‘sharp’ thrust to the start of recoil like most gas or recoil operated systems do. Roller delayed brings a kinda double pulse THEN the main recoil from the bolt mass reciprocation. Most other system give a sharper hit first instead.

In its time (1950s) that was pretty slick, the viable competition was long stroke or short stroke piston gas guns in their infancy. Again, hyper-nuance here but the gas port and big boi off axis reciprocating mass robs accuracy. It lowkey sucks in anything outside of a pistol or intermediate rifle cartridge compared to a short stroke piston system. That big ol’ bolt has some stout slap to it at the end and reset of travel.

The main downside of any delayed blowback system compared to gas operated systems is that it doesn’t actually lock close, it merely slows the backwards movement of the bolt at the beginning of the cycle using mechanical advantage. This causes bulged cases and more difficult extraction with high pressure ammo. You also get higher bolt speeds with higher pressure, creating bolt bounce issues.

You can still run delayed blowback with rifle ammo using clever design (fluted chambers, anti-bounce mechanisms, etc) but gas operation is more sensible
