I never understood the hate against Raygun. Are there set moves in breakdancing? It’s not like ballet where you have to do very specific things.
It’s not just the form but the skill. I can’t dance the macarena to save my life, but when looking at her moves it’s unimpressive from a skill standpoint. Most people have seen more difficult, more coordinated, more agile moves pretty much anywhere on tv. It’s okay, but it’s not Olympics material. And then you hear the rumors that she got in because someone did her a favor, and that’s just unfair. There were other applicants more deserving of that opportunity, not to mention she’s making Australia look corrupt as fuck when it comes to judging their candidates.
Per this article, there were no favors.
But odd she won some prestigious competitions yet doesn’t even seem qualified
It’s easy to win when no one shows up to compete.
On an unrelated note, her PhD topic is along the lines of obstacles to women in breaking.
Tbh, the hate is largely good old fashioned bullying. The rumors of cheating have been completely disproven. She qualified, she knew she was unlikely to win. She’s almost 20 years older than her oldest opponent and this was perhaps her first time competing at that level. Her performance had good parts.
I think the gleeful bullying is disgusting. Fucking armchair critics.
Edit: there are specific moves, but it’s largely improvisational. you are judged comparatively against the other b-boy. If you watch the full set the commentators will call them out. her full set
It’s like if I somehow got into the olympics for gymnastics and spent my routine doing the hokey pokey, the other athletes would think I’m making fun of them. I think at least, that’s where the hate in the breakdancing community comes from.
As for wider hate, I don’t recall seeing much, I think online most just thought it was funny as hell.
All the comments here miss the fact that she rigged the Australian qualifier, lacks the skill to compete fairly, denying more talented candidates, and thus, did not deserve to be there.
False, https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/australian-breakdancer-raygun-olympics/
The Internet just likes to bully people.
My understanding is the only Australian breakdancing professional women who are better than her don’t have citizenship, so cannot compete.
Its not about cheating is that she kept aloft of talented Australian break dancers out of the process to go to the Olympics. Massive POS!
There was no conspiracy, though… She won the qualifying event and got sent to the Olympics. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/australian-breakdancer-raygun-olympics/
I’m sure there are a ton of great athletes all over the world who don’t have a chance to go to the Olympics. That’s life.
The whole process was rigged. There was no national call for dancers and Holy Molly was objectively better in the qualifiers, though not as good as other B-girls around the country.
Raygun was an absolute embarrassment and shouldn’t have been sent over. There’s a time and place to practice new moves and the Olympics is not the place.
She won lol
There is a huge difference between someone singing lyrics with melody and a nice voice and another who’s just reading those lyrics with flat talking voice. That’s how I look at it. She has a concept of break dancing, but she’s talking reading it… Flat. No talent.
Edit: another way to think about it is if someone one went into a gymnastics tournament and only did cartwheels the whole time.I really don’t think Raygun could have thought of a much better scenario than the one she’s living right now. She’s world famous and it’s not like she was going to win any medals anyway. She should take advantage of this situation and just run with it. Write a book, make speeches, do events. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Don’t get all offended about it.
Its actually hard to believe she didnt cheat because just the physical ability is clearly not there, maybe judges had sympathy for her but I’ve seen the person who lost to her in qualifying and they are just objectively better. It would be less embarassing for her if she did cheat really but the truth is probably that it was a reverse-agism
This is the first time the sport is in the Olympics, not a lot of people to compete on locals, so if she knew how to navigate the burocracy she could easily got her spot without cheating.
it’s also the last time. At least for the foreseeable future
And to think that threating litigation to silence critique and save face was just an American phenomenon.
they should just rename it to “photonic weapon: the musical”
Laser tube, the discharge continued… A CW mix musical.
Just now, I did a raygun when I accidentally slipped on soapy kitchen flooring.
