Vivendi were complete pricks. They knew they were breaking the law the entire time and still tried to tank Valve, their own asset, instead of just stopping it.
That intern was the hero we needed 🫡
A nice story. I just find it a bit odd that the article says nothing about what became of “Andrew”, the summer intern, whether Valve paid him an appropriate bonus or offered him a job later on.
Still just a Summer intern, all these years later.
Perhaps they nicknamed him “the giant” for his trouble tho
Why doesn’t it surprise me that they end up paving the way for Activision Blizzard… “On 2 December 2007, Vivendi announced that it would be merging its game publishing unit with Activision in a $18.8 billion deal. This will allow the merged company, Activision Blizzard, to rival Electronic Arts, the world’s biggest video game publisher.” Cited from https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivendi Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7123582.stm https://www.reuters.com/article/us-activision-vivendi-idUSN0236714920071202/
Proud of mah boy Andrew!
There is no mention at all of any payment for the summer intern in the article. Shouldn’t be a surprise, really.
Whole article about how massive success stories are one legal battle away from not being made in this country, as well as the exploitation of workers’ other skills without additional (if any) compensation. They completely miss that angle on the story somehow.
I thought this was missing in the text too, but it’s valve, they’re well know for treating their employees much better than other companies. Tech interns are almost always paid, even by the more exploitive companies.
I wouldn’t assume this was an unpaid intern or that they didn’t get a bonus for saving valve just because there’s nothing mentioned in the article.
I think we should petition Valve to award that intern Andrew something big, like a million bucks or so, if that hasn’t happened yet! They might just be cool enough to go with it!
Let’s gooo Andrew!!
