Did they actually paint a heart on it?
No, the heart symbol (with that connotation) only comes about in the middle ages. Prior to this, the shape used in art generally referenced foliage.
That’s the kill spot. Heart, lungs, liver, het yer spear right up in there.
It definitely looks like a modern cartoon heart, but it may have been a depiction of a wound or something else symbolic.
Maybe it’s an ear? There’s a bump in front of the face that would match for the right. It’s a really pleasing detail the more I look at it.
