Why are people willing to sell their kids to defend the above companies?

I don’t really see this happening.

As for why I recommend some things, it’s usually because my recommendation is better than the alternative.

Perfection is hard to find, but in the meantime I’ll recommend something good over something bad.

Same here. I only support those companies because they’re the best options for what they offer, and I’m not gonna let perfection get in the way of progress. Even though Mozilla is making some business choices I don’t agree with, I’m gonna keep recommending Firefox until some other non-Chromium browser comes along (which unfortunately isn’t gonna happen for a long time).

Same with AMD- they are so much more friendly to the open-source community than Nvidia or Intel, so I will recommend them to everyone, until the moment they start being worse. At that point, I’ll start recommending whoever seems best at that point in time.

With Apple it’s just sunk cost fallacy / Stockholm syndrome. Maybe you like apple products, that’s fine. But when you’re later confronted with almost £1000 for a monitor stand the mind needs to choose between i) I’m a mug and these people have clearly taken advantage of me or ii) no, this is a superior product, I’m a superior consumer, those poor chumps just can’t see it.

    There isn’t really an in-between.

Apple does have a genuinely good eco system and a lot of good products.

The 1000 dollar monitor stand is not one of them though.

I never really understood why people rave about apple’s ecosystem. I find that my android phone and Windows pc can do anything I need them to do, conveniently, and it’s easy to transfer data between them or over the Web. I find it very frustrating that iphones only support a small range of file types, and that they can only use Bluetooth with other iPhones.

      Flexing on the poors, too.

Casio objectively makes the best watches out there but Rolex is doing a very brisk business.

Jeez there’s been a shit ton of astroturfing happening lately. I guess Lemmy is finally big enough to be targeted by these guys.

How much do you all get paid? I’m interested.

I can’t speak for 404 Media, but the rest of them build products that people enjoy using. They fill a niche that the users appreciate and do a good job at it.

It’s hard to fault people for liking things.

I think you should reframe the thinking. All corporations are profit driven, and exploiting a devoted fanbase is very profitable. Innovation, customer service, commitment to quality, these are things that cam build loyalty, but capitalism demands growth. If you run out of ideas or saturate the market, the only way to grow profits is to cut costs. Customer service and commitment to quality might be the last things to go, but they will go eventually.

Apple and microsoft have each a market cap value of 3 trillion dollars (3.000.000.000.000). That’s 3 times 1000 billions. A billion is 1000 times a million. There’s a million millions in a trillion. With about 1000$ or even less a month you can pay someone to shill for your “cult” 8 hours a day.
