Welcome to the Melbourne Community Daily Discussion Thread.
Work from home, light day on the schedule at work, so I decided to do a cheeky bake session in the garage.
Guess who was looking at the wrong Friday, and has meetings all afternoon?
Go on, guess.
This gave me a good chuckle, thank you lol. Good luck! 😂
I’ll manage. Not completely baked, just nice and toasty. Can function without arising too much suspicion.

Of course not. Mine neither.
I’d say you read the schedule 100% and applied the correct survival strategy
Good advice. Got one more to go and am, thankfully, feeling grounded
the garage?
Compression session!
I wasn’t ‘baking’ I was getting ‘baked’
The baker
Dinner is served. The silverside did not fall apart.
I am the master chef, come at me bruh 🖐🖐
Yay, go you! Perfect!
🥰💜
Masterfully executed silverside!
First time too, I don’t generally cook meat. Turned out real nice. Leftovers will be used in another dish.
You little beauty. Tuck in and enjoy. Don’t forget the mustard.
🤤👉👉
Looks fantastic.
Leaving me drooling here with how tasty it all looks.
Minus points for ovening potato… but I still want it
I’ll cook you a smol german feast instead: homemade pretzels, kartoffelpuffers, sauerkraut, bratwurst. Much better than this.
I accept your terms of surrender
😳🥔😍
That sounds delicious!
Oh.
Oh no.
As part of the sorting I redid the TV stand (we’re going to eventually put the TV on an articulated arm up over the fireplace, with the cavity cabinetted out as a console nook), moved it out into His Lordship’s office ‘cos the little bugger has had greedy eyes on it since we started dating 20 odd years ago and wants it for his gaming corner (it’s actually mine and predates him), then shufted the big ol’ 78 record player over where the TV stand was and plonked the TV and accoutrements on top of it as a temporary measure.
Thing is, that’s over a heating vent.
And Misha remembered she fits under it
spoiler
Image ID: A fat buttery cat wedged under a record player in front of a heating vent with no intentions of moving
I have made a terrible mistake
Your cat is really adorable!
She’s a demon shitbag, mother of buttheads!
I know the feeling lol
Good kitty.
Day off today to celebrate Mr Smeg’s birthday.
Then tomorrow is the day we pickup the dog
Not a bad week really
Happy Birthday! 🎂
Happy birthday to Mr Smeg! I hope you all have a lovely day and omg yay Batdog!!
Happy birthday to Mr Smeg and happy gotcha day to little Batdog! Have a great long weekend.
Apparently the Melbourne subreddit has been banned for “violating the Reddit rules”? Huh…
I wonder what rules 🤔
Honestly I think this is Spez going after the subreddits that dared to challenge him. He did threaten to some time ago, after all.
Looks to be back now… seems like the mods are either not saying why or don’t know themselves.
Edit: “We reached out to them and they did the bleep bloop and we’re back from the dead 🙌”
👀
People are asking why on r/australia. This looks interesting.
Good :D
Holy shit!
I do love the hubs but jesus I get a lot more done when he’s not around. Dining room is 100% cleared, most of lounge, things getting squared away and navigable w00t w00t. Also I get to blare music like whoa.
one horrible upside to the housing crisis: It’s real easy to get rid of packing boxes on your local buy nothing group
Dins:
Image is of spring rolls in lettuce.
yum yum spring rolls in lettuce is my fave 😍🤤
bloody hell there are lots of great cooks here on the dt😊
Yummm.
Good grief! Just sat on the West Gate Bridge for almost over an hour, contemplated driving off the edge for a second there. 25 minutes home took almost 2hrs in the middle of the fkn night.
I hate that bloody thing
I swear the west is cursed
Whats on for the weekend all? Last night i went out dancing to a live jazz band which was lots of fun. Tonight is Fish & Chips and mead maintenance. Tomorrow is yoga/meditation at the Buddhist centre followed by my first date in 2 years, going to see Oppenheimer, excited and nervous haha. Saturday night going to see the Burnt Sausages and then we have a nice chilled out Sunday :)
I have a cake to make today, drinks tonight and lunch at the local Vietnamese restaurant on Saturday.
Chocolate mousse cake?
You are correct.
Goodluck :)
Thank you.
Just a chill night tonight. Tomorrow going to an “Emo vs Anime” club thing which should be super interesting lol Sunday I train a friend of mine at the gym and make meals for the week. Good luck tonight!
Sounds like a great weekend :)
Final (8 week follow up) psychology sesh with the really awesome dude, gonna be back at mine for the weekend after a month so lots of plant maintenance to do. Cooking. And then maybe Barbie with a friend
Good luck on the date mate!
Date should be okay, at least its not an app first date. Its someone i met on my snow trip who was a friend of a friend that we were staying with, so we have already spent some time together :)
Enjoy the plant maintenance and movie :)
I think, and I could well be wrong here, that we don’t have any kids birthday parties on this weekend for once.
Haha, i hope for your sake that you are correct and you get to enjoy your weekend some other way :P
Ok, get the pitch forks out.
I don’t like sardines. They are too fishy. There, I said it.
Cheers you bohemians 🍺🍺🍺
Cheers maggot 🍺🍺🍺
I think I’d really like a miller hi-life, the champagne of beers
or maybe some stella on tap
Cheers fellow (or fellette)
Why are most of the men’s trunks/boxer shorts so thin and synthetic? No one wants sweaty nut sack and crack. That’s bizarre.
It’s the shitification of clothes in general. Everything is thinner, flimsier, bad seams, shape cut for minimum cost not for best fit, etc. I remember when socks, underwear, tshirts could go through washer and drier and last for years. Now you’re lucky to get six months out of some stuff. It quickly shrinks, twists, pills, develops holes, elastic fails. They are selling junk.

Commando
No. I do the washing thanks.
My partner gets his from the outdoor shops for hiking & daily wear and the thin & synthetic ones are some of the best ones. I have the same ones but female version. I guess the point is, not all thin & synthetic materials are made equal. Hope that makes sense.
I’ll take your word for it. Personally I’ve never worn synthetic and I never will. Everybody’s different I guess. Makes a more interesting world.
I have had a couple of ex officio brand synthetics that I got about 5 years ago for some hiking. Still use them to this day as daily underwear, they’re my favourite and have definitely stood the test of time
I either go cotton boxers from Mitch Dowd or bamboo from Boody, bit expensive but it’s worth it to have happy junk.
It’s a sad state of affairs when you’ve gotta pay more for something so basic just to be comfortable.
It really is. I try and mostly wear natural fabrics (for environmental and longevity reasons), and prices are insane for something as simple as socks.
Yeah. The socks I looked at were either thick thermal “I’m going to the snow” mf’s or the work socks were as thin as dress socks. I ended up getting Darn Tough men’s work socks but I know they won’t last long.
I’ve been wearing $10/5pk bonds jocks for years that are fine.
That’s what he wears. Some of the Bonds trunks and boxer shorts though are pathetic. Blokes are being gaslit into believing they don’t need a gusset.

It’s one of my favourite words.
I wish gussets were more common in pants and undies.
get some bamboo up ya. His Lordship has become a knobby devotee
I’ve got a couple of pairs of step ones that have lasted probably 3 years now? pretty happy with them. The breath real good too!
Some decent brands use material that’s quite good a drawing sweat away. I’ve got half a dozen on Nike trunks and they’re the best. The stitching around the waistband is a bit meh, but my nether regions are nice comfy.
Oh. I just wanted some novelty ones for the man because he usually wears jocks because he likes his tackle nice and close.
I know Kmart have been doing ‘better cotton’ which may be recycled cotton. Which involves shorter lower quality fibres and potentially being mixed with synthetic fibres
Would love someone to do a proper analysis on this. Is it ‘better’ if the item is recycled but so poorly made it gets thrown out sooner, or is it better to have a good quality item that lasts longer. My instinct say better quality stuff, because there is no additional cost of disposal, collection, recycling, manufacture, distribution. Using the stuff we already own for longer is the most environmentally friendly option.
What are the Kmart ones like? I quite like their cotton-rich range, does the mens range have similar? I also like the Kmart period pants for bike riding - that extra layer of padding is most welcome.
I have no idea what they are like.
This ongoing situation at work has me horrifically anxious. I am so done with toxic workplaces and just wish i could find a chill job to settle down in and probably return to study. My last job ended up being very toxic and now this one. I’m feeling pretty hopeless and terrified my next job is also going to be toxic. Man I wish i had a time machine so I could just relive the years 2011 - 2017 over and over again. Those were happy years with a great job.
What happened to that 2011 2017 job?
I sadly got made redundant after the company was bought out by an investment firm
Cheers misfits and 'ave a bloody good weekend 🍺
Chin chin! 🍻
Cheers chicky babe 🍺

Just quietly I think University is quite often a bit of a scam.
@wscholermann @bot001 well given the origins were for rich people (and the children of rich people) to do something with their spare time, it explains why quite a few degrees aren’t much use. But they do help you understand why things are the way they are. Just tough titties if you don’t have independent wealth to sustain you after you work this out.
Pretty sure universities were originally started by religious orders to be a place of learning. For them learning was a form of worship. This applies to both xian and Muslim universities.
@Seagoon_ there seems to be conflicting information online but most universities seem to exist separate to religious orders, despite historically being very heavily influenced by them at times.
the origin of universities per se, I’m talking 1000 years ago
But each university that exists today was founded for a unique reason
but to call universities places where rich people could do hobbies is insulting to both universities and to scholars and scientists.
For example, Darwin was a gentleman scientist. It wasn’t just something he did in his spare time. It was his vocation.
@Seagoon_ yes, but he could only afford science to become a vocation because he was the son of a wealthy financier.
“The world’s first university, The University of Al Qarawiynn, was founded in 895 CE by a woman named Fatima al-Fihri. She used her inheritance to form a large mosque with an associated school”
… so the world’s first university apparently started by a woman of leisure who assumedly had a hefty inheritance if she could afford to start a University.
Even Siddhartha Gautama was a nobleman.
The luxury to spend time thinking and learning has traditionally been afforded to the wealthy, not the working class, and so when young folks now go to uni and feel like it was a scam, it’s worth noting this history.
the sciences are probably the least scammy
and getting a job is not guaranteed
I wish I’d lived in the what are you talking about , University is free era. I would love to study some sort of science, maybe astro-physics or something…
One of Miss Seagoon’s friends did a masters in Astro-Physics, her aim was to join the European space program. But she still couldn’t get in so she did a teaching degree too. But she does not regret studying one bit. ( her degrees were free but she does live in Europe )
I. Am.Just.So.Jealous of all of that.
A regret I have is that I have right-of-abode in the UK. Prior to Brexit, that meant I qualified for subsidised university throughout Europe (as long as I could qualify)…I thought about looking into that at one point, and didn’t.
I regret that, but if I’d done that I wouldn’t have met MrsCalhoon and wouldn’t have kidcalhoon1/2… So, you know, fair trade.
So,
shethey teach astro-physics?Uni’s free for foreigners in Germany and some other EU counties I think…
She teaches physics at yr 12 level. ( I’m so proud of her, I’ve known her since she was 12. )
Right on. I loved year 12 physics.
Ironically less guaranteed in the sciences in Australia since Australia has a teeny tiny industry.
The whole system is a scam. Individuals and governments pay for education, and businesses use those people to make profits without contributing to the system that creates skilled people. But to not be so pessimistic, I personally enjoyed my time at uni, even though I don’t use any of it directly now. It expanded my horizons and was a foot in the door, that I otherwise wouldn’t have gotten. I am a better person for having gone.
