i saw those in the settings for post sorting, and was wondering what they even do lol
“Active (default): Calculates a rank based on the score and time of the latest comment, with decay over time
Hot: Like active, but uses time when the post was published”
This is what I like about the fediverse. I asked a similar question on Reddit a long time ago. Got a snarky comment “it is what it sounds like” and nothing else.
Thanks for answering.
Glad I could help. Not too long ago I was thinking about the same question myself, so looking up the answer a second time was fairly easy.
Will hot be improved in the future? It keep showing new dead posts on my end.
there was a bug in hot that showed years old posts. should be fixed in the latest versions.

I also want to know. I notice “hot” seems almost completely useless right now. A lot of posts with hardly any upvotes or comments get counted as “hot”. Yet, I believe it’s the default sort, which is a shame.

Eh, it’s still good to know.
I’m not totally sure but I think active is based on the rate of comments and hot is based on the rate of upvotes + random sprinkling of years old stuff.
Which one is better to find new communities?
