Web pages were loading in the foreign language my VPN was in, so I tried using a free proxy but couldn’t find a reliable way to make that work. Any suggestions?

On your VPN, choose a location within your country. There is little sense in choosing another country, if you want the website to think you are in your own country.

Of course this assumes, that your VPN has multiple exit nodes.

It’s because the website is trying to guess your country by the IP you’re using instead of browser useragent. Don’t know anything to change that, only change the language on the page if possible

Can’t have it both ways. Either you use your own country and then (if geoip works) it also thinks that you are there or use another and then it will think you are there.

If you’re worried about your government, then you shouldn’t be using a VPN, you should be using Tor Browser to stay anonymous.

You need to set it to your own country.

Unless there’s another place with a majority of people who speak the same language. Then, you can set the VPN to that country instead.

If you’re comfortable with English, I’d set it to English instead. It’s a bit less specific, so it’s another ‘layer’ that makes collecting data on you *a bit* less accurate.
