Shortest day of the year is almost here Australia
www.weatherzone.com.auAustralia is on the verge of having its shortest day and longest night of the year, with the Southern Hemisphere’s winter solstice occurring in one week’s time.
The winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere marks the moment the Earth’s South Pole reaches its furthest tilt away from the Sun. On the date of the winter solstice, all of Australia experiences its shortest day of the year based on daylight hours and its longest night of the year based on darkness hours.

This year’s Southern Hemisphere winter solstice will occur at 12:58 am AEST on Thursday, June 22.
Due to the angle of the solar terminator at the winter solstice, Adelaide and Townsville experience sunset within a couple of minutes of each other. For comparison, their sunsets are more than one hour apart on the summer solstice in late December.
Following next week’s winter solstice, days will start to become longer, and nights will get shorter for the next six months, until the date of the summer solstice on December 22.
I can’t wait, I am on standalone solar between two hills. At the moment my panels are getting about 3 hours direct sunlight per day, not good for the batteries or my wallet as I am having to run the genny each day. (Doesnt help that it has been rainy/overcast for the past 6 days)
Hopefully tomorrow is a new day as I have just increased my PV array by 100% today. Fingers crossed.
Nice, where are you? I bought a place in regional Tas a few years ago, and after growing up there my only real criteria was “not in the winter shadow of a mountain halfway across the state”. Which is kinda hard.
At the end of a dirt road on the southern part of great dividing range, 80km from the nearest town. It is paradise, but for a month every year the sun is a bit lacklustre. Tassie is nice, been only once but fond memories of the place, admittedly that was 45yrs ago.
