Hi, my mom got into gaming and asked me for recommendations. She has a laptop, but here comes the catch(es)…

She is not comfortable at all with using the keyboard because of pain in her left arm. Controller doesn’t work either because of this but the mouse is fine.

The games should not be violent at all. Like, many Point’ And Click adventures and Hidden Object Games have a dark story. My dad says these really work her up and she ponders about those dark stories for days lol (in a negative way).

Honestly, I play completely different games so I have no idea what to tell her.

Thank you all so much! Got my mum hooked onto Dorfromantik and Cities Skylines for the time being. And some ideas for the next birthday as well.

Thanks, that’s a great game. I even got a copy for me as well lol I wish they would release it on ipad for my girlfriend, though. I think it would sell really well on mobile…

Have you ever thought about getting her a variation of the Xbox Adaptive Controller?

I didn’t know this existed. Brought me down a rabbit hole of ways to play games for people with limited mobility. Will definitely remember this for her and spread the word

The mum game of all mum games in my experience is The Sims. I’ve got mine hooked on Sims 2 by accident and it’s actually fairly innocent if your playing style is.

Even though any simmer will unavoidably become a genocidal maniac, at some point. But for sensitive people, this might still be a good game.

However, if that’s too dark still (because even Sims 4, the most innocent entry, can have inter-character drama), maybe some farming games may work. The kind you’d find on Facebook. Mine is playing those a lot, but I can only think of Farmerama, right now. But that can also be a money milking machine.

I didn’t even think of the Sims, that’s a good suggestion. Thank you! The drama is okay, it’s more like murder cases and stuff that she doesn’t like.

Free games unfortunately all have item shops and those waiting times for crops to grow, she doesn’t play on her mobile because she doesn’t like these kind of features. Her gold standard in games is SimCity. If I had to guess than I’d say she played that one for 1000 hours.

What about Cities: Skylines then? Although it is very much like SimCity, maybe it’s different enough to give it a try?

Thanks, this was the best gift. “Just like Sim City but bigger and better” (-Mum)

Would she be interested in virtual pet sites?

Dappervolk.com has a very cozy, charming world full of ever evolving lore, super lovely characters and hundreds of collectable pets.

Subeta.net is another virtual pet site but is less story and pets focused and instead has regular holiday events, optional pet battling and a ridiculously good avatar wardrobe with hundreds of thousands of items in it (which I am hopelessly addicted to as it really is that good).

There is this game called “4 Elements”/“4 Elements II” that I used to play a lot as a child. It is quite old, but that makes it even better. There are no ads, shops, etc. Just the game. Here is a trailer for the (second) game: https://youtu.be/TUuxzHj5C2A Unfortunately there is no official download anymore, but you can apparently get the games from the Internet Archive here (4 Elements) and here (4 Elements II).

My only grip with that game is that I don’t have any music files on my pc anymore and therefor can’t play it.
