But how seamless have you guys found kbin to lemmy interaction? Can you subscribe to Lemmy communities through kbin?
it has the core functionalities down. but there are some relatively minor annoyances/confusion points in the user experience which should be fixed.
for context, this is from the perspective of viewing a post from a lemmy instance on a kbin instance.
when users talk about problems/culture/anything specific to their instance, they don’t tend to specify which instance they are talking about. which makes things confusing for users seeing the post on other instances.
For example, the lemmy.world instance is having technical difficulties, a user makes a post saying “are we having technical problems with the site?”, a kbin user has no information based on the title or content preview which instance that post is talking about.a comprehensive search for communities in lemmy+kbin+other activitypub platforms does not exist. which makes it hard for users to search across the entire fediverse to find that one niche community that they enjoy.
searching for communities on a lemmy instance only shows communities from lemmy instances, and the same for kbinFor example, for a lemmy community to show up on Kbin.social, someone from kbin.social would have first needed to subscribe to that lemmy community by manually finding and entering its entire address name, only then would that community show up in a kbin.social search, or vice versa. if a kbin user has a niche interest, and a small community for that interest exists on a lemmy instance, they would not be able to find it (or at least not easily ie. needing to search through a second website that can access lemmy communities)this may just be a personal annoyance, and it is also something more cultural than technical, but many users use either “lemmy” or “kbin” or the domain name of their instance to refer to the whole fediverse. which is probably just something that will always happen with new users, at least until the community and software becomes more developed.

searching for communities on a lemmy instance only shows communities from lemmy instances, and the same for kbin.
the magazine search seems to find lemmy communities just fine. If i search “cats”, for example, I can find Cats@kbin.social, cat@lemmy.world, cats@midwest.social, cats@sh.itjust.works etc.
The search function on kbin.social shows lemmy communities when someone on kbin.social first subscribes to that lemmy community. It will not show up if no one has subscribed to that community before you.
This is why niche communities will be hard to find, popular communities will be easy to search.
Even within kbin instances communities are not searched globally. For example, I made a Korean language community on kbin.social, if I search for it on another kbin instance like fedia.io, it will not show up
It is incredibly seamless. This post appears to me as a native Kbin post would.
Perhaps a bit too seamless as there is no indication of which instance users are from unless you go and check their profile. I can see this becoming an issue down the line, so I picked up a userscript that fixes the problem (it has other features, but that’s the one I mostly use it for).
I use the same script! Its very nice to see which instance a user is on and the community/mag is on. I love how they can all be different and it just works. It’s already feeling very natural.
I don’t know why, but some magazines are not federation (like the PS5@lemmy.ml). And if you try to use the link from kbin to check the community, I get a community not found, but, if I use Firefox to go to the link it works nicely
I’m on kbin and have no issues interacting with lemmy communities, as well as beehaw, mastodon, etc. the first few days I was here federation was down, but it’s working quite well now.
I’ve noticed that on desktop, using my lemmy.world account led to me either getting signed out on certain instances or just not being able to interact with them; on Kbin however, the fact that I can see and interact with this post and ones on --for example-- lemmy.blahaj.zone is a good sign. I’ll still keep both accounts esp since Jerboa doesn’t allow kbin accounts on there, so I’ll keep experimenting with this
I wouldn’t have noticed the difference if I hadn’t gone down to look at your user info. (I don’t know if it’s just a mobile Firefox thing, but the layout is a bit wonky on my end)
Shows up over here on https://readit.buzz and on mastodon over on https://universeodon.com - we haven’t even scratched the surface of what activitypub can do for connected platforms.
I am running into a problem right now where I commented from this @kbin.social account on a @lemmy.world post, and then another @kbin.social account replied to me. I get the notification that I was replied to here on @kbin.social. But when I go to the kbin.social version of that lemmy.world thread, it shows none of the replies to my comment. Is there a way to manually federate those replies to pull them into this instance? In addition to being annoying that I have to leave this instance to see the comment, I also can’t interact with them from lemmy.world using my kbin.social account.
EDIT: wow looks like they’re federating now, I can see them from kbin. Have no idea what caused that, so if anyone cares to explain still I’m all ears!
It seems to be buggy at the moment. Clicking on responses does not always lead to the comment so I can’t find it anymore, I’m seeing duplicate responses to different comments even though they are all the same comment (checked on the user’s profile page). Dunno if the instance is getting too much traffic again or if it’s a code issue.
It’s been well 90% of the time, but I do notice a few communities/magazines are not federating very well, or just plain missing. I wonder if it’s a Kbin issue and will sort itself out with more servers/bandwidth.

There’s also a noticeable delay. So far I don’t know if it happens because I used Kbin to post on lemmy.ml or whether it’s something else, but it took about 10-15 minutes for a post to show up on other Lemmy instances, including lemmy.ml even though I posted in hardware@lemmy.ml.
I notice that you created this 53 minutes ago, but my notifications for magazines i follow says it was 3 minutes ago so there is something that could be improved upon. in general i believe they are working out the kinks and the site is more fluid than during the first @RedditMigration
edit: i take it back being just a federated user thing, all my content notifications are dozens of minutes late now
Maybe there’s something that runs every once in a while to check for new notifications and it just isn’t as frequent as it should be
I haven’t really noticed many issues with federation besides the known issues with notifications not always working (not sure if that’s federation specific) and the fact that votes don’t seem to sync identically. I was comparing a thread here vs its Lemmy host and noticed that while comments transferred in a few seconds, there’s something wrong with the vote count. I don’t remember the numbers, but it was something like +40 on kbin but +150 on Lemmy, which is a huge difference.
