I will vote for whoever fights against Trump but, my god, this site is starting to feel like a propaganda mill.

I’m that 1% of user that has posted a lot here. Most posts do fine, but the myopic worldview and toxicity on Lemmy always reminds me why I’m not here so much these days. The community (and sometimes mods) have decided that certain topics/viewpoints are not to be joked about and dissention will not be tolerated.

Honestly, the same problem can be found all throughout the internet. Twitter is super right wing and Reddit is super left wing. 4chan is cancer. I’d love to find a place that isn’t just an echo-chamber but I’m not sure that exists anymore.

Bad takes get downvotes. More at 11.

If you can’t see that this place is an echo-chamber, then not much I say can convince you. But, knowing this is futile, I’ll elaborate.

All the top voted political takes were pro-Biden staying in the race and now are pro Harris taking the nomination. Dissenting opinions are often downvoted. Even in this community, you are only allowed to make fun of Republicans. Even lightly making fun of the left will be downvoted (and I do mean lightly… I am on the left myself).

The ironic thing is you’re complaining that disaention will not be tolerated, but your complaining that people dissent to your opinion. You are against people dissenting when it’s useful to you, but want your dissent protected. Yeah, I can see how that could cause you issues.

Not really. When my opinion matches the majority, it is upvoted (see my post history). When my opinions do not match the hive-mind, they will be downvoted. It really doesn’t matter what reasoning you have, what matters on Lemmy is whether you agree with the dominant sentiment.

I like that it’s “majority” when you agree with it and “hive-mind” when you disagree. Of course when the majority disagree the net is negative. That’s basically what that means. Do you expect the minority opinion to get more up-votes?

Again, you’re just comaining that sometimes people don’t agree with you, and implying they always should. Hell no. You take the down votes and the up votes in kind. They are indications of opinion where people let you know their opinion. You don’t just get to say whatever you want and have people not allowed to disagree because your opinion is sacred or whatever.

You are strawmanning me pretty hard right now. The main point isn’t that everyone should agree with me; but rather that Lemmy would be a nicer place if a wider spectrum of views were acceptable.

It’s basically a meme at this point, but try to explain why you think Windows is better than Linux and you get a collective ass pounding. That’s the mentality I’m talking about.

On some subjects yes, but they are 110% pro death penalty, anti body positivity, fairly racist in news stories about poc anyone doing bad anything, pretty misogynistic, and you know, rabid assholes that are just erect and ready to dog pile on anyone, doc anyone, as long as they, often mistakenly, are accused of stuff.

Yeah, I see that. Lemmy has a lot of self-righteous users unwilling to see a joke, which means mildly spicy memes can do poorly. It feels like people would rather claim some moral high ground than laugh.

Some people mistake passion for anger. They see a representation of what they are most familiar with, in context with what they most expect given their environment.

Unfortunately, you’re going to see a lot of sentiment just like this: Excited people happy to have something positive to aim for, and those who see that excitement in context of political posting and one-sided arguments.

It’s not just Lemmy; I’m seeing the same kind of posts and comments on Imgur. I’m sure reddit is the same but I’m not about to go back there to check. So while it is in fact propaganda, it’s also a sign that the majority of Americans using these platforms support Harris. Don’t know about Facebook cause I don’t use it either, but it’s probably more of a mixed bag of Harris and Trump supporters like I’m seeing on YouTube.

I felt completely horrible after the debate, I can accept Biden was sick, jet laged, on nyquil, just woke up from a nap, and heavily distracted because he couldn’t stop thinking about his cat Reggie. But that was beyond acceptable, it’s REALLY frustrating to have three elections in a row. THREE. Where both candidates, no matter who wins, would be the oldest president we’ve ever had on record. So yeah. I’m excited to vote for someone that doesn’t have future shock when they see a Super Nintendo.

Kamala being on the ticket, a moved forced by circumstances, can change the mentality of our dear, often poor strategically inclined, Blue butts. If we come out strong for Kamala, and make it clear that we are voting FOR her just as much as against fascist fucks, some of them will see justification for putting up candidates that aren’t always old, white, and distracted by cats called Reggie.

Anybody who still refuses to vote is just looking for excuses to maintain a lazy nihilistic attitude.

At this point, anyone who can vote but won’t - “dOn’T cArE! bOtH pArTiEs ArE tHe SaMe!” - is just an imbecile throwing an infantile tantrum. Then there’s also always right-wing divide-and-conquer shitheads clumsily shifting gears.

Aside from the reference calling someone a coconut is a great way to get them offside if they’ve got brown skin, so I wouldn’t recommend going around saying that title in real life…

Oh yeah, it’s not supposed to be a title, it’s an idea

"My mother … would give us a hard time sometimes, and she would say to us, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?’ " Harris said with a laugh. “You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you.”

The whole point is believing people aren’t coconuts and that they’re way more complicated than that

I agree, I just thought it worth mentioning that telling people ‘don’t be be a coconut’ has the potential to backfire if you want them to be agreeable to whatever you say next.

Can anyone less lazy than me fact check this?

I’d vote for a rock over a convicted felon, but it would be cool to have a reason to be pro-Harris.
