I am using the offical Linux Client (4.3.2) on Fedora but the connections are very slow. I played around with the few settings the client offers but it’s not getting better. Sometimes the speedtest seems okay with UDP, but when I download large files the speed stays around a few hundred kilobytes per second. Without VPN the same downloads are much, much faster ofc.
Anyone having the same issues? Is anyone even using the official client? Or is it better to directly add the connection? Also the GUI of the VPN client seems to be very slow and buggy.
Sounds like wherever you’re downloading from has the VPN rate-limited. Have you tried downloads from other providers?
Actually this time it was the Proton Pass for Linux download from Proton itself where I noticed that. I also have this problem on steam or when updating fedora. And when I browse the web it always takes some time till it even starts connecting to a site.
It’s always dependent on the time of day, as the more folks in your local area connecting to the local node will slow down everyones speed. Are you using a free VPN or do you pay for the service? This can drastically impact the speed as the number of Proton users on the server you’re using also can reduce your speed.
Alternatively, do you use a DNS to filter BS connections only there for tracking? Paying for the VPN + using NextDNS to stop unwanted connections has resulted with my speeds being a minimum of 3MB with a max around 150MB. I have a 300MB connection, but the time of day, DNS filtering, as well as routing through a VPN all influence your speed. Thankfully these speeds are more than enough for my use case and also add to my ability to have online anonymity.
Edit: I use the official client but use the WiFi settings in Fedora to connect to my DNS server. There’s also a setting to increase speeds in the Proton client, maybe give that a shot too if you don’t have it turned on.
To back them up, a DNS sinkhole is incredible and will absolutely increase speeds in the long run
Thx for answer. I am a premium user actually. I don’t use any DNS filter and the setting to increase speed is already on. I will try to connect with the fedora settings directly tough.
Is the official client working smoothly for you?
I haven’t had any major issues at all, it’s been great all in all. I run Proton’s VPN and NextDNS on my devices as well as router too.
Without VPN the same downloads are much, much faster ofc
same,
I know many people suggested downloading the openvpn or wireguard config file, but I like the convenience of starting the app and connecting to whatever the fastest server is.
But still the current app isn’t the best, I hope they will improve soon
