I had heard about Mastodon and was aware of the concept of federated platforms. This is the first fedi service that I signed up for and I was very surprised at how easy it was and how optimistic the vibe was. Afterwards I decided to check out Mastodon, Pixelfed and Matrix. I found this cool website that tracks users accross the different instances and services https://fedidb.org/ I’m blown away by the growth of Lemmy.

The New Zealand community feels very small and tightknit on these platforms. I have never been a social media person so I do not know what to post.

Have you branched out to any other platforms? If so whats your experience been like compared to the alternative services?

What are some interesting people/instances to follow on Mastodon/pixelfed? I am interested in people who work on projects and document their progress and show off things they made. Also cute pets.

It’s worth checking out fediservices.nz, who I’m mentioning not (just) because they are providing hosting for us here, but also because they run a bunch of fediverse sites, and their site just lists and links to them so it’s easy to see what there is.

One I like is bookwyrm, a goodreads type site. There’s an NZ instance at bookworm.nz (linked on the above site).

Other than mastodon, and perhaps the chat service Matrix, they are all pretty immature so expect bugs and not a lot of users.

Haha I do have some stuff running on a Raspberry Pi, but not this, just stuff for me and some family.

I started running lemmy.nz on a $2/month VPS (which was surprising much snappier than the Raspberry Pi) but quickly got an offer for a much more powerful server, so couldn’t turn it down.
