near the entrance of my local loblaws-type grocery store, someone wrote on a wall
they fixed the price of bread
every time I go there it catches my eye. it is the context in which I do my shopping and when things costs too much i am reminded of the general thievery going on.
Find a locally-owned bakery. Make a point of giving them your business, even if the loaves cost slightly more. It will taste better and be healthier for you.
Find local farmers who sell hamper subscriptions; baskets of fresh produce. Some even have greenhouses to keep producing through the winter seasons. If you have a service they value in exchange, barter with them.
My wife’s a teacher and one family has given us amazing bundles of carrots, greens, eggs, all through the winter in partial payment for teaching their kids. It’s a wonderful thing.
The day local food producers throw in the towel is the day we all lose, so make sure they never go away!
