According to the StatCounter, Linux on the desktop has continued to rise and remains above 4%, with this being the healthiest it's ever looked on the desktop.
This is a huge advantage PC users have over Chromebook and Apple users. If you buy a Chromebook, you are locked into that ecosystem and there are very few models that allow you to overwrite ChromeOS without breaking it. Apple computers are another ecosystem that also lock you into their environment where you may have to go out of your way to heavily modify it to even get close to Windows or Linux.
But with PC? People can freely tell Windows to fuck off, get Linux and the sacrifices will be minimal.
Intel Mac computers run linux great, and Asahi Linux is marching ever closer to full feature parity on Apple Silicon. The boot-loader is only locked on iPhones and iPads, their computers are nothing close to a chromebook in that regard.
And honestly nah, macOS is way less awful than Windows these days. It’s a lot less user hostile and isn’t constantly trying to sell you shit. And you can still install apps from outside the store, so it isn’t the same walled garden as their mobile devices. Windows 10 when it was first released was still better, but Windows 11 and the mess that 10 has become at current version is worse in every way. It just has the momentum of being a monopoly.
