I have read most of what has been published for the manga (a volume or so behind I would guess). I had not remembered at all that the opening chapter begins with the funeral of Ars’s father (I looked it up to check). So, I was quite confused for a minute there.

Overall, this first episode looked really nice. I can’t really complain about the animation too much. Even the fight scene with Rietz looked pretty good. The one complaint I will lodge is that the depiction of Ars’s ability is much harder to make sense of in anime than in the manga. Compare what was shown in the show with this:

Based on next episode’s preview, one of the more fun members of the retinue is showing up next. My favorite member doesn’t come until much later, but she is in the OP, so I am looking forward to that.

It definitely felt like the stats he was seeing would work a lot better in a manga, where they could dump all the info they wanted and readers could engage as much or as little as they liked with them. The floating text in the anime was a bit weird, lol. Also nice to know that the two numbers are current and max. I figured it was something like that, but it wasn’t made clear.

This looks very nice and the characters are all likeable, but I worry whenever a show is this focused on political maneuvering, because it can be hard to predict what kind of worldview the author has until we’re pretty far in. I like that we’re dealing with issues of racism and xenophobia, but based on this episode I’m not sure if the anime is equipped to handle it well. I’ll give it a couple more episodes to see. Hopefully our hero is out to make the world a better place rather than just maintain the status quo (except a couple of talented people are lifted from poverty).

As is, I tentatively give it a 3/5, with lots of room in either direction, depending on how things turn out.

I had kind of forgotten how bleak Rietz’s situation was in the beginning of this series and how harshly he was treated. I think that Ars does bring his modern world sensibilities to his style of leadership (wanting to make the world a better place), but he is also very practical in that he recognizes he is just the son of a small-time lord, standing at the precipice of war (raising a couple of talented people out of poverty). I am looking forward to seeing more of Ars’s retinue enter the show, as the characters in the group are a lot of fun.

Having that kind of constraint can be a pro or a con, depending on the writer. It can either give the protagonist some tough problems to solve and make them fight for every little scrap of quality of life they bring to their people, or it can make a nice excuse for the protagonist to set aside lofty goals of equal rights because there are bigger problems.

I just worry a bit that this is the kind of story that considers Rietz’s problems solved because he caught Ars’s eye, when there are still people just like him starving in the streets and Rietz would still be among them if Ars hadn’t happened across him. Plenty of political anime bring up systemic problems and then call them solved when the protagonist handpicks some individuals to live the good life, so I’m always wary.

I watched this episode a few days ago, apparently it was leaked.

The manga is fun and the first episode was decent enough, so I’m planning to watch this series.

This first episode was good enough, but it seems like the plot is “collect the best servants” part of a standard isekai, without the MC having any actual combat powers.
