The two companies are in active negotiations to let Apple license Gemini, Google’s set of generative AI models, to power some new features coming to the iPhone software this year, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the deliberations are private. Apple also recently held discussions with OpenAI and has considered using its model, according to the people.
Edit: Apple in Talks With Google to Bring Gemini AI Features to iPhone (macrumors, no paywall)
[…] According to Gurman, however, Apple is focusing on features that operate on-device and do not require an internet connection. To power additional cloud-based generative AI features, such as the ability to create images and write essays based on single prompts, Apple is seeking a partner that has the necessary large-scale hardware infrastructure and compute capabilities already in place.
According to previous reporting by Gurman, Apple has been internally testing an “Apple GPT” rival that could compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT […]. However, the technology is still not as advanced as tools from Google and other rivals, making a partnership look like the better option, according to the latest report.
DONT.
Michael Scott: “Don’t…”
So, I have a firm anti-Google stance. I won’t use anything that has their involvement. So, looks like I’m getting a PinePhone.
You’re insane.
No, just hilariously unaware of the PinePhone’s limitations - and so is everyone who down voted you.
It was more of a joke. There’s nothing else but iOS at this point.
GrapheneOS also works somewhat.
My favorite quality in a device…
It would be a tempting choice if forced to use Android, but leaving iOS for GrapheneOS (Android) would be a step in the wrong direction.
Actually, GrapheneOS would be a significant step in a better direction, even before Gemini gets added to the iOS equation.
GrapheneOS is Android. And using Android at all is supporting Google. Even if it’s de-googled. Just like using any chromium browser. Although, it does look like a good choice for Android users.
I have faith that Apple would do this right. Your phone is unlikely to hit Google directly for AI stuff. It would be just another iCloud service.
It’s all about money for Apple. Not about user privacy. They track lots of info from their users as well and even want to sell AppleTV+ subscriptions with advertising!! Ridiculous
The erosion of privacy was always an absolute certainty once Apple started the transition to becoming a service-based company, and why I only choose Linux-compatible cross-platform apps and services for everything essential.
Apple fanboys (or paid guerrilla marketers) have downvoted me every time I point this out, and I’m sure that will continue… indefinitely.
They won’t hand much, if any, user data to Google with this deal, but the profit multiplier promised by predictive analytics guarantees the endless march of surveillance capitalism will continue.
So Apple’s in-house LLM sucks? I was really hoping the big AI update that was promised for iOS18 would be for improving the on-device AI features utilizing the neural processors but I guess it looks like that won’t be the case.
Siri already sucks, replacing Siri with Gemini doesn’t give me confidence in Apple’s AI vision
So we can buy Android now as well?
Well, if your reason was “I use Apple because I don’t like Google” then yes. Better work with the real deal than a limited piece of crap that won’t allow you to install adblockers and adblocked apps.
If you like the Apple interface and ecosystem better then there’s no hope for you.
I’m hoping this is temporary until they build their own platform.
Anyone got a paywall-free link?
In keeping with the Siri brand, Apple has to make sure LLM-Siri’s underlying model is bad at everything
