What’s really disgusting is how many people support the “anti-Tik Tok bill” just because they hate Tik Tok, or they hate China’s government, or whatever the reason. These people are so short-sighted that they can’t see through all the obvious propaganda to comprehend the many ways this bill can and WILL be used to restrict online activity on any platform that they conveniently deem connected to a “foreign adversary.”
It’s like we forgot all about things like McCarthyism and the Patriot Act, and if you try to explain this to people, they just dig their heels in and say they “don’t see anything in the bill that’s concerning.”
The whole thing is concerning! No matter how one feels about Tik Tok, this is absolutely not a thing that the government should be doing, not something we should be naively supporting. People’s support for this ban makes me facepalm so hard it could rip a hole in the fabric of space and time.
“Show me a citation that proves this bill will be abused.” Of course, I can’t do that, and neither can anyone else. But with the tiniest bit of historical knowledge, we should know better. We should know how this will play out.
Are we so numb to the fact that we’re already surveilled, which started after 9/11 and has never ended? Are we numb to the fact that McCarthyism has never ended? (If you don’t believe me, look into how we effectively bar self-reported communists and anarchists from residency and citizenship.) Just gonna keep throwing more fuel onto the fire, are we? Maybe it’s a fetish, like “oppress me harder, daddy!”
Sorry, I know I’m being melodramatic, but it’s unfathomable to me how ignorant we can be about things like this.
At this point, it’s difficult to believe it’s mere cluelessness.
What’s clueless about it? The partisan split pretty clearly aligns with American voters. Republicans vote against everyone’s best interests, Democrats divided on issues of wealth distribution, tiny fringe groups refuse to participate.
What’s disgusting about opposing things that do harm? It’s not propaganda that TikTok collects the most data with least regard for privacy or safety, and it’s not propaganda that TikTok attempts to censor news coverage.
Sure it might affect other centralized platforms, but fuck em. The government is restricting their access, not controlling them directly.
It’s unfathomably naive to believe this will only affect Tik Tok, but go off
That reply has nothing to do with my comment, please read my comment before replying to it. Half the commentators on here feel like shitty AI chatbots, smh.
Oh, I see. You’re a troll. Have a day.
Oh, I see. You’re incapable of parsing my comment. Skill issue.

That’s not so much an argument against cutting off ByteDance.
It’s an argument for how bad our legislators are, for not doing the other things also.
Which I imagine, most everyone agrees with. The point there is that US politicians can come together to pass policy when they want to, and they simply don’t give a shit about the people living in US.
They’re protecting us from foreign agents. Like how they’re going to jail Trump and all the Republicans that are taking Russian money to take over democracy. Oh wait, that’s not happening either! /s
But the dancing! ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)
