maybe they only come online once a week and only want to see just the new stuff since they were last online.
how do you figure that they are terminally online just because of how they sort ?
If no one sorted by new, nothing would get votes and then be places in the hot or controversial bins, so then everyone would have just the newest of things.
This is even more meaningless than your original statement.
