Hutton’s Vireo, Gulf Islands, BC, Canada
Oh I love birds. We live in an appartement on the top floor and last winter we bought a birdfeeder, a peanutbutter holder and a nestbox. We work from home and it is so wonderful to have birds on the balcony. Last year the nest had a family of blue tits, and the young are still around this day. They make quite a mess of the food, play around, sometimes looking in to see what is going on inside our house. It is a welcome addition to our life. I hope this year we have another nest around. Wonderful.
It’s nice being on the top floor, since you probably don’t need to worry about rats and squirrels. We have several feeders in the yard, but it’s a constant adventure trying to protect the food from squirrels, and keep the rats away. It’s worth it though, watching those birds brings me a lot of joy, and I’ll admit, the squirrels do too. Not so much the rats.
I live on the second floor and even though i never ever see any squirrels, they must be coming to my balcony, because every year they bury peanuts in my flower pots. Or at least i’d have no idea who else would bury the peanuts.
Could it be Stellar’s Jays? I’ve seen them digging around in our planters before.
No, sadly we don’t have these nice birds around where i live.
They are nice birds. They’re really beautiful and fun to watch. We moved to a new area about 8 years ago that has them, so it’s always a treat when we see them. Unfortunately they’re very shy. If they even sense that you’re watching them, they fly away. I got pretty good at spying on them from inside. Over time, they became more accustomed to us and stopped being so skittish. Now we’re able to sit on the couch when one is at the feeder outside the window and watch it, as long as we don’t make any sudden movements.
Great pic! I don’t know birding but I really like this community and all the birds :). This bird also looks a lot like this one: Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Thanks. The Vireo landed very close to me and I thought it was a Kinglet when I quickly took the pic. It was only after when I downloaded it that I realized it was a Vireo. Easy to mix up!!!
they do look a lot alike but the lack of the black bar beneath the white wingbar makes this bird a Hutton’s Vireo
there’s a good comparison pair of photos at this link
