    Well, you don’t just chow down on something strange. You take a tiny nibble, see what happens. Rinse and repeat with larger bits.

    What I want to know is how some groups figured out how to eat stuff that requires complex preparation to remove toxicity. How do you iterate on that?!

      You take a tiny nibble, see what happens. Rinse and repeat with larger bits.

      In the course of a few days… takes a while for the poison to start working.

        Not really. For example, even the worst mushrooms are only going to give you a tummy ache from a tiny nibble. And that’s going to happen within a couple of hours. Not like 1/4 of a berry is going to drop you dead 3 days later.

          No, I meant as in, take a bite, wait a few hours take a bigger one, wait a few hours more… my point was, the sampling process might take days.
