Bought it used (but literally like new, not even a scratch) for €180 and then slapped on it 2x32GB RAM sticks (Patriot, DDR4 3200Mhz, €68 for the two sticks), a 1TB M.2 2280 (WD_BLUE SN570, €54) and a used Intel AX200 Wi-Fi card (€15) for a total of €317 for the laptop + the upgrades (+ this dock as the seller included it with the laptop: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd500180-thinkpad-hybrid-usb-c-with-usb-a-dock-overview-and-service-parts). I also did a repaste with some Noctua NT-H2 paste I had laying around.
I’m really happy with it right now, and yes the T480 does support 64GB of total RAM despite the official website and even the system itself reporting 32GB as the maximum installable capacity, and yes you can also go for higher frequency sticks as long as they are DDR4 as they’ll downclock themselves to the max supported frequency of your laptop anyway, this is important because old DDR4 sticks are rare and expensive.
Snoo? This isn’t Reddit!
I ignored this until now but your life must be incredibly pathetic if you need to upvote your own assholish comment with alts like fuck_yoo@sh.itjust.works, @TransientPunk@lemmy.world and @transientpunk@lemmy.ca and downvote me and Artemis with the same alts. You probably don’t know how Lemmy works if you thought your vote manipulation would go unnoticed.
Oh my! I’m sure most of us didn’t know this isn’t Reddit…Thank you for the impressive, useful and most informative comment which imagine that, is actually very Reddit like. 🤭
What’s ironic is that I’m getting lectured about my username by someone who calls himself a punk 👀
You have everything in my history to work with, and that’s the best you can come up with? Sad…
Thanks for the suggestion punk but a troll’s profile doesn’t interest me.
Great buy and upgrades, btw what is the model number of the RAM sticks? It’s actually useful if someone needs to buy compatible RAM.
The sticks I bought were Patriot Memory SODIMM DDR4 3200Mhz sticks. The full details are: DDR4 3200 MHz PC4-25600 32Go (1x32Go) C22 - PSD432G32002S.
Much appreciated! I’m sure those details might help someone in the future.
Cool! The T480s are great laptops. Thats what mine is and it runs flawlessly on Arch.
I flinched there for a second but I absolutely hate the s subversion of the series forgoing the RJ45 port completely. We procure them for some high management and execs. The base version is rock solid
Epic post OP thanks for the info!
That’s a alot of dedicated wam
next step is to find out what I should dedotate it to
ramdisk
Yup that’s exactly what I’m going to do. The Arch Linux wiki has good guides about that:
I’m still running on my T480, but got the i7 and discreet graphics from the start. Did the SSD AND 32GB upgrade about 5 years back. I’m sure it’ll last till the end of Win10 support and THEN it’ll probably go Linux.
