There was no real alternative back when I started using Unity.
There has been one for years now though. Look, you can justify your decisions to yourself as you want, but you still have to buy the Unity CEO a new yacht.
I don’t have to buy shit. My games aren’t popular enough to meet the threshold. But my point is I started before before Godot was released. I accumulated a collection of tools and assets that can’t simply replace. And blaming the people who got screwed by a policy that wasn’t in the agreement they accepted isn’t helping anyone.
Blaming? I didn’t blame anyone. I just posted a meme.
I was fine with the meme. It’s perfectly valid. I was just reacting to the “you can justify your decisions to yourself” part which came across to me as a bit overly-judgmental.

I might’ve overreacted a bit. I sometimes get that way when I’m sleep deprived and anxious about unrelated things.
Was that around 2010 targeting mainly the then much smaller Android/iOS space?
2013 I think. And yes, I was looking to target Android with a 3D game.
