FUCK ADS!
Podcast ads can be some of the most acceptable, when it’s the hosts reading about products they might’ve used / didn’t mind using.
If a quick “sub to Audible” is the difference between a Patreon paywall / content unavailable & free listening, well, make it quick pls 😉
sidebar - shoutout styropyro for some ad for a science desk where he lit the one he got free on fire. Sponsorblockers missed a fun segment there (arguably making up for it with less dubious supplement spam of course)
Edit: that might not be the exact video but it’s awesome
Top comment on that video was “happy to see your okay”, and the person who replied to your comment here shared a similar sentiment. Is there reason for this guy’s viewers to worry he might not be okay, or is it just a case of someone not posting for a long time between videos?
Edit: in the first three minutes of that linked video, he says “it’s actually kinda funny that I’m even allowed to own this”. I think I get why people worry now
Yes, poor guy, something like -
YouTuber Drake reveals a complicated and ongoing health situation, starting with unexpectedly high testosterone levels, leading to numerous tests, insurance company disputes, a potential liver disease diagnosis after years of abnormal blood markers, and a temporary redirection of his focus from creating his typical YouTube videos to pursuing personal passions like storm chasing, while assuring fans of his eventual return.
I take it you’ve not seen any of his videos? He plays around with incredibly powerful lasers and electronics etc
I’ve said this since being a kid in the 90s.
There should be a huge collection (I called it a book or catalog at the time because the Internet wasn’t widely available yet) that does all the different companies that do X things or provide Y service (kinda like yellow pages, but with more information than just a phone number) that is filterable in tons of ways (by default, region) and if you need or want anything you just look up who provides it and make your decision by the information available there.
But it should stay contained in that book (or whatever form it takes) and legally not be allowed outside of it. Every other piece of “free” content (podcasts, and people you find interesting) should actually be free.
But capitalism.
"Hey, you should install this app, Honey, it literally gives you free money! ignore all the requests to porn sites its making, and the weird and convuloted blockchain features!.
While you’re at it, get nordvpn, so we can use the internet while encrypted and stop facebook tracking us!
"
“Raid, Shadow Legends”
Since you mention nord vpn… it’s also annoying that content creators seem to think a vpn I’d something that keeps your passwords safe.
They’re almost definitely shilling something they don’t even know what it does.
I think nord offers a password manager alongside the vpn now, which is where that comes from. But yea, I hate the way vpns are always presented in those ads. I think most people now know the word “vpn” but most still don’t know what it actually means, but think they do.
Many students in my IT class think that a VPN is just “that thing that encrypts your Internet”.
You got to teach your kids how to pirate. A VPN isn’t the thing that encrypts your internet, it’s the thing that keeps your ISP from knowing that the 200 GiB you’ve uploaded this month was all copyrighted material
Not that I speak from experience
As someone who works in tech, I feel like the sales pitch for VPNs is snakeoil for the average person. All you’re doing is trading out your own ISP spying on you for another ISP who can spy on you. I know I have rights if my ISP spies on me in my own country, but if my traffic is all egressing via a foreign country, I may have zero privacy rights in that country.
If you need to hide your torrenting activity, just use a seedbox. If you need to hide from the NSA, none of this is going to help you. And TLS basically does the rest.
Same with DNS-over-HTTPS - the DNS server is where they’re going to be spying on you!
If you need to hide your torrenting activity, just use a seedbox
I never understood seedboxes. A VPN on my own hardware works nicely. I hate cloud stuff. With a seedbox I’d have limited storage and would need to constantly pay monthly fees for it. Instead, I can just use my own hard drives on my own hardware.
NordVPN (and every other vpn, honestly) is good for torrents, they even have dedicated torrent nodes. I got a multi-year thing, for under 3 euros a month.
NordVPN is not good for torrents, they don’t support port forwarding
Can you explain how port forwarding is used for torrenting and how it works with other VPNs?
Basically, if you aren’t port forwarded, you will get less peers. This is because you aren’t allowing incoming traffic, so only other port forwarded peers can talk to you. If you are port forwarded, you get all the peers.
With vpns that support port forwarding, you can set the port forwarded port on the VPN to the port in your bittorrent client and it will allow incoming traffic.
Interesting, thanks for answering me. I didn’t know about this.
Stun
who the f does i gave up
AirVPN
Okay so I know Lemmy won’t like this but I’m one of those idiots on the free money apps AND also I’m taking steps to privatize other parts of my online presence. I am well aware of the dissonance.
But in my defence, the site I use to make money still works even though I block ads on their games. And I’m broke, yo.
were you not paying attention or have you already forgotten that Honey is scamming the very content creators who shilled it (and others) by hijacking their affiliate links via cookie stuffing? By using Honey you’re actively fucking over people who get income from affiliate marketing.
Ok maybe I didn’t understand the other comment cause I have no idea what Honey is. The site I use is not really advertised (at least I’ve never seen any ads or influencers for it).
Edit: Oh omg lol I thought they were saying honey as like someone talking to their spouse (like in the comic). Reading comprehension is weak. idk wtf that app is.
tbh: I don’t care about other people’s affiliate links - they only sell bs anyway. what would scare me much more, is what they are willing to do to ppl like you and me. if they are willing to fuck around with ‘influencers’, which can have quite a bit of money and reach - to what extent are they ok to fuck around with ppl, that don’t have any money?
they only sell bs anyway
- They don’t always sell BS, many creators link to gear they actually use
- Most sites will attribute a sale to an affiliate link even if you end up buying something else ftom them.
The main concern of yours is legit. Definitely a “too good to be true” situation.
I don’t buy from affiliate links either btw.
It’s one thing to avoid particular marketplaces that have affiliate programs like Amazon, but if you’re going to buy something from them anyway, wouldn’t it be better to go out of your way to use an affiliate link? No affiliate link means giving more money to Amazon. Affiliate link means you can choose someone to get a small piece of the profits.
You are correct, I just don’t really buy stuff from big online marketplaces.
Sooo, are people not mashing that forward button until they hit podcast again?
I’m almost always listening to podcasts while doing things like driving, exercising, or biking, so no I can’t really dick around with my phone to skip stuff easily most of the time.
I will actually pull my bike onto the sidewalk and stop to skip ads lol
I recently discovered, the “next track” button on my steering wheel is not actually “next track” but “skip 30sec” in the podcast app (AntennaPod). Absolute game changer. I skip all sponsors now! YMMW depending on the app.
Ooh, I got a new car recently; I should check this
I had the same problem until I got a PineTime watch. Now I can use the navigation buttons on the watch face to skip ads (safely and responsibly, of course).
Lol I can’t help but notice this reads like an ad and I can’t tell if it was intentional.
A little. I had a pebble until the company got bought and killed.
I want to see enough people buy a PineTime that they succeed, so I can get another one when my current one dies.
PineTime watch
How did you get yours to stay paired? I can’t get mine to stay connected after the initial pairing 🫤
I had a ton of trouble with that when I first got it, but now it’s fantastic.
There’s been some (very recent) patches to InfinityOS and maybe one to Gadget bridge that helped a lot. Lately it’s been great.
If it’s still running a version before like 1.18(?), try to get it to update itself, and it may get a lot better.
I’ll have to give it another look. Been rocking my Pebble again for a couple weeks now, I missed it quite a lot. The app is horridly outdated though, and the PineTime felt like a great stopgap until it just wouldn’t stay paired.
Check your headphones, there may be an option to skip ahead by tapping or holding a button/area.
There’s a track skip but no fast forward in mine, unfortunately
My podcast app lets you customize how far forward the “skip forward” button skips, which was really useful at first… And then my podcasts started running different length ads. It doesn’t help that the only podcast I really listen to these days is Hey Riddle Riddle, where ad segments are indistinguishable from scenes
Vibes from Truman show when his wife starts her mococa product placement during his distress. God the pervasiveness of listening to humans chat about a product really has proven to sell… AI podcast tailored to your preferences that puts their product placement in the best spot after leading you towards a huge need for it… Ye it’s best to start pruning your media right away
Audible is ok, but you have to have restraint. Get you 12 or 24 credits, Make sure none of the books you’re buying are available through overdrive with your library, spend your points, cancel, go through all those books, Read a few on dead trees, or even a few from LibGen, then when it’s all done wait until you can’t wait anymore and sign up for another 12 or 24 credits.
Save your audio books for when you’re driving or cooking or cleaning, Don’t just sit on the couch and listen to them.
And use the tools to rip them immediately. Until you extract mp3 data out of your books they’re not you are books.
they’re not you are books
…
Sorry I was driving at the time and Google AI is slowly ruining voice dictation. They’re not your books.
Please don’t browse lemmy while you’re driving
Dead stopped in traffic. Phone handsfree hence dictation.
homie. calm down. it’s a dash mark. not a catastrophe.
You had the option of saying it’s an apostrophe not a catastrophe and you didn’t fucking take it
yeh that was my point, sorry it didn’t land
LaVar Burton would like a word.
*LeVar
dead trees?
Paper ;)
ah :)

Trees certainly didn’t

instead of giving money to a Bezos/Amazon owned service, you can support services like libro.fm that let you download/own the audiobook mp3 outright.
I spot checked a few things I’m reading, they’re about 20-50% more expensive. It kind of looks like they’re just a new front end for Barnes & Noble, but with worse curation
You can also go directly to the publishers and save a couple of bucks.
I’m down for paying a bit more at a local retail store, or maybe even a few percent on an online store. But I have to pay $47.24 for Dune, I’m probably just going to pirate it.
Understandable. FWIW members (15 USD/month at this time) get a discount and the option to use one of the credits you get each month. So Dune can be had for 14.99. I get the pricey books with credits, others I use the discount for. It’s a bit odd and I don’t love memberships, but I do want to support ownership models where they still exist.
If you share access with friends and family using a self-hosted audiobook server then the value really sky-rockets.
I remember hearing Burr’s ad the same morning he released the podcast, I was commuting an hour to work thanks to a blizzard the previous day and that dude lifted my spirits that day with this gem and his genuine improvised Monday Morning podcast feeling like he was sitting in my truck next to me complaining the whole time
It’s beautiful when he shits on the copy or even better, wonders out loud why the fuck anyone would use the product.
on spotify i just hit the skip 15 button like 6 times anytime i hear their outro music. then if i hear ads still i hit again until i don’t hear ads.
Antennapod let’s you program the skip buttons up to 60 seconds, which is a delight.
If you’re hearing the outro, why not just go to the next thing?
And if that’s limited because Spotify sucks (I have never used it), then get a podcast app that’s not cancer. You don’t even need a subscription for those (unless they’re exclusive or something, in which case your taste is objectively bad, so have fun dealing with that).
I meant outro as the “going into commercial” bit. Sorry for the confusion, not sure what that’s supposed to be called. When it gets to the end I do move on to the next one.
Use pocket casts or antennapod*. Huge qol increase.
Good tip for Spotify folks
OK now not to preach!
A couple people have argued we can avoid consolidating more power in Spotify, who envisions a world of exclusive/proprietary podcasts, by going with other options
Oh man it’s been a while since I’ve heard sharis berry’s haha
I just fucking died listening to that again.
Me undies. Do they still exist?
So it’s not free. The cost is $0, but that is not the same as free.
Think “free” as in “free audiobooks”, not “free speech”
Who are you trying to reply to??
The title, with some context from the posted image.
Bruh literally lmfaoooo
Casper? All my pods talk about helix
Even if it is in jest, that’s a block.
The only thing I’ve tried that’s advertised on stuff I listen to or watch is BOLLORRRB VEE PEE ENN. It has honestly been excellent. I don’t want to use Proton (though I’m pretty sure it’s the best) because I don’t want my VPN and E-mail services to be the same thing. Mullvad sounds great but no port forwarding. Been torrenting Linux IOS every day for years and never had an issue with BLLORRRB.
