You can practice FOSS-only on your own, but don’t force it upon others. If they want to use a paid service, then let them.

I can’t really blame Sync devs for needing to eat.

Let’s complain about the issues that force monetization not the monetization itself.

Free in FOSS means as in freedom, not free as in beer. You can demand pay for foss software. You don’t have to distribute it for free. The only requirement is that you provide source code if asked for and the other person can also you can modify it and redistribute it (for a price or free) if he wants.

I’m quite out of the loop with sync for lemmy, and frankly don’t give a shit. Just please don’t spread disinformatiin on what foss is.

What’s worse is attacking the developer, which is not going to encourage devs to build for lemmy at all.

And they’re attacking someone that was literally begged to bring his app to lemmy, with oaths to pay up. Nobody begged him to go open source. Nobody begged him to do it for free.

It’s shitty to go after Dawson. Nobody but an asshole would do so. FOSS zealotry is no better than religious zealotry, or vegan zealotry, or atheist zealotry, or crossfit zealotry (just to fill out the meme of those three lol).

Don’t like it? That’s fine. Don’t use it. But don’t be a giant, gaping asshole about it.

It sends telemetry data to about 30 companies. Pretty standard for Google Play tracking and it’s not possible to know if the data is being taken advantage of or not.

It’s good to be cautious of that. But if you’re completely offended by that or if you’re completely accepting of that, you should consider the situation better.

It’s a new Lemmy mobile app that is a port of one of the most popular Reddit 3rd party apps, and has one of the cleanest UIs. Sync for Lemmy feels just like Reddit did for people who used Sync for Reddit, and people are nostalgic for it. Sync fans are stoked to have their old app back, but tech nerds are mad that the app is not FOSS (free, open source software) like many other Lemmy apps, it has ads, pricey in app purchases, and sells user data
