    “Let us use your land for free in exchange for ‘protection’” sounds a lot like a mafia extortion. Then again I guess the US is used to taking land that isn’t their’s for free.

      This is a tactic used by any empire. It could be US, China or Russia. I am glad when any smaller nation pushes back against empire.
