  • I actually downgraded from whatever the latest Note was at the time for a second hand 6a. No complaints. And a fraction of the cost, and I’m not paying Verizon monthly installments for a “free” phone.

Related, I used to armor my phone because I get up to things that could result in damaging the phone up to and including dropping it in several feet of water. If it happens to my Pixel I’ll just go get another used one. Less stress FTW!

  • So, then, according to corpo logic, you’ve setup a system that automatically repeatedly breaks the law (copyright , maybe? Ianal).

And if the liability is on you for hosting a federation service with no control over the content and you are accountable for the replicated content, then it is effectively the end of federation. Again, not a lawyer but given how much the law favors corps over individual rights in the US it seems like it would track.

  • Fuck OneDrive with a rusty hook.

Ok, so not OneDrive generally but specifically the unholy merging of OD and Win11. JFC when I navigate to a folder and save a file there THAT FILE HAD BETTER FUCKING BE THERE and not in some shadow folder you default mapped to OneDrive because FUCK ME, RIGHT?

This irritates me so much. Get off my lawn.

  • Thanks for sharing this. Started hosting a local copy of several wiki sources last weekend once this news broke.

Another commenter said downloading is missing out on the best part of Wikipedia, the ongoing editing. Which, while true, is also going to be a weak point.

How many of those amazing editors are going to stick around when their full time job becomes combatting obvious right wing bullshit, when they have to submit gov ID to have an account on the site, and when common sense and fairness becomes a crime?

Wikipedia was a high point for humanity. Whatever comes next I’d like to preserve a little piece of it.

  • I admit prior to the pandemic I wouldn’t have minded going to a somewhat mediocre but kinda entertaining movie as part of a night out. Now it is too expensive and the theaters are depressing shadows of their former selves and unless I 100% know a movie is good and can get 2-3 family members to agree I’m not going to a theater.

I think something else that has happened is the breadth of available media in the streaming age means it is easy for individuals to find a show or movie that fits their individual tastes. No compromise needed. I know in my house getting everyone to agree to watch a single show or movie is impossible. No way we’re all piling in the car, driving through ridiculous traffic to sit in a dirty theater that smells like warmed over urinal cakes to watch something none of us are particularly interested in. Why do that when I can chill watching reruns of Stargate SG-1, my spouse is rocking Tik Tok, my kid is watching Twitch?

Movies as a collective experience died circa 2020.
