  • Trains not planes is a much more reasonable and practical way to get people behind building more railways than planes not cars. We can talk planes not cars once some of the initial infrastructure is in place, but I think focusing on replacing something people hate (flying) rather than replacing something they like (driving) is probably a good place to start.

  • I buy stuff that lasts. For bread, I find that rye takes weeks longer than white or wheat to start going bad, and bagels last ages too. I make smoothies with mostly frozen fruit. For dinner stuff, if I’m not feeling like cooking I either buy things I’m going to eat in the next few days or I get these sealed precooked things from Aldi that are great and keep well. Coconut milk also tends to keep better than cow milk and lately I’ve realized I greatly prefer it.

About the only things that are super perishable that I keep around are bananas and avocados, and I just tend to eat these a lot. I also keep spinach or kale around for my smoothies, but I rebag them into separate smaller bags as soon as I get them. If my bananas are getting overripe, they get frozen for smoothies.

I also tend to buy canned soups, which last ages.

When I was cooking regularly I’d make a lot of chilis and pasta sauces. They’re good to freeze and they keep well on their own. Chili is arguably better after freezing and having more time to develop.

You can definitely eat pretty healthy and keep plenty of food in the house without constantly chasing waste.

  • The energy tied up in all of that is so familiar. Just the entire vibe of senseless unmitigated cruelty and mindless nonsensical screaming hits so hard and reminds me so much of some of the shittiest people I’ve encountered in my life. What Joe describes feels like a horrible distillation of something that’s a lot more pervasive than any one ‘school’ or cult or particular group of organized assholes systematically ruining people’s lives. It hit hard. Thanks for sharing it.

  • If it was replaced with a decent wage, sure. In the mean time, though, if people stop tipping workers who don’t make a living wage they’re just taking part in exploiting their labor.

I will say that when I was younger and waiting tables, tipped wages in place of minimum wage worked out pretty great for me. I worked at a diner once a week for four hours on sundays to supplement my income and I’d walk out of there with at least $200 every time. I don’t think anyone would have been willing to pay me that outright.

What? I asked what makes you certain that the dock isn’t designed for it. If you’re certain, presumably you have a reason for this certainty and already know the specs from looking at it. I can’t see into your mind to know your motivation for making this assertion, which is why I asked.

I assume you have some expertise that makes this obvious to you, so would you like to share it?
