  • Oh I hear you, the new hitman games are far from bad, and I agree with you they are kinda a culmination of lessons learned in the previous games.

The main thing which bothers me is the handholding, where it comes up “mission story revealing” and then guides you. I’d love to at least pretend I’m working it out for myself. I understand you can turn that off, but I’ve also read online that doing so skips some story dialogue, would love it to turn out that’s wrong.

It’s also down to personal preference for me; I just happen to prefer some of the levels from the classic games. I also dislike the UI and general vibe of the new ones, how it feels like a live service. I appreciate my word choice of “superior” was overly strong in hindsight, I really meant it subjectively and was not trying to make a reaching claim. Both classic and new are very good, marketing and DRM aside.

  • Absolutely understandable. I didn’t get it that way purely because I personally get very anxious about viruses etc when it comes to sourcing games/software. But I did deliberately get a key off a grey market site to give them as little profit as possible.

I also hate how handholdy all the fun stuff is, it totally removes that element of working it out yourself which felt so good in the previous games. I haven’t tried freelancer mode yet, I’ll give it a go.

  • Ah I see! Thanks for the explainer, I see where I misunderstood it.

I thought invidious got the entire video stream and streamed it back to the viewer - not just the link to it. So even if YouTube sees the invidious instance ip as the one grabbing the link, it would still see your ip as the one actually watching the stream.

I guess the bot related error I mentioned comes from when the server tries to get the stream link.

  • I’m still quite new to this but it is my understanding that invidious does serve as a proxy IF you are using a public instance. This is, I believe, why many instances get hit by the “sign in to confirm you’re not a bot, this helps protect our community” error due to so much traffic from the instance IP.

If you’re hosting your own instance YouTube will be able to see your IP. Since while it’s technically proxying your video requests, it’s still on your network.

I’m new to invidious and networking stuff in general so if I’m wrong please correct me.

  • I have a Minisform Venus UM790pro and have been using it since February for gaming and hosting a couple of servers. It’s currently available on the minisforum website for $599 with 32Gb Ram and a 1TB SSD. I think this would be perfect for your needs, if not a little overkill.

I’ve never had any overheating issues with it, even when playing slightly more demanding games like Horizon Zero Dawn for many hours. Its 1080p gaming performance is very solid. It has a couple of issues with poor WiFi and Bluetooth signal but if you can work around those (usb dongles fix it) it’s a great system.

  • Bit of a weird one but because I love the sea, and sailing, the classic folk song “The Mary Ellen Carter” by Stan Rogers really gets me fired up. It’s about a ship that sinks and the efforts of the crew to raise her and sail her again. When I feel at my emotional worst the last verse repeats in my mind:

“And you to whom adversity has dealt the final blow, with smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go: turn to, and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain and like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again!”
