I ignore the existence of that and so far it hasn’t seemed to matter.

I messed with those settings before and it mattered a bunch and gave me all kind of issues

Same, I’ve just been hoping that I’m seeing all the content and it’s back to normal now

The other day, I started to not be able to comment, only on some replies, without applying a language, which I selected to be English. Other replies, let me keep it Select language/untouched. This is in comments though, not for posts.

Same lol. I managed to break both my community as well as the entire instance by messing with those settings. The UI could be a bit more user friendly on that imo.

Right now the language selector has become the part of the admin UI that no one on my team is allowed to touch, under death threath, lmao.

because the problem only comes up if you do lol. if one day they cut that feature out, you won’t even notice anything change.

I still get the “language not allowed” every now and then when commenting even though I set it to english

I had to play with these after I tired to post somewhere and it told me “language not accepted”. Setting English cleared this up so I could comment.

Isn’t that just saying “most content is set to undetermined”? I.e. most posters don’t care.

I think most users/viewers would have English and undetermined set, so it should be a good idea to use English for English content.

I wish more posters would use it so foreign language posts wouldn’t show up in my All so much lol. It’d be nice if you could have a default language that set your posts to that and you could change it if you want. I imagine 99+% of posters will only ever post in one language.

          True, and I agree 99% isn’t true, but I don’t think 40% is either.
I speak two languages fluently and have somewhat of an understanding of a third, yet have still posted 100% in English so far… and that’s not my native language.

Wasn’t trying to argue it was 40%, was just trying to give an example of why the “99%” figure was laughably off base.

“Foreign” languages communities aren’t big enough on Lemmy for people to only post in them. Most people will post in English too.

Yeah 99% was definitely an overstatement, honestly I forgot the fact that people would still post in English even if it isn’t their own language just because of how ubiquitous it is online. I still think the feature would help a lot and it wouldn’t make it any harder than the current state for people that do post in multiple languages.
