Many newbs are washing up here, myself included. What are good ways to get the most out of Lemmy? (Using Jerboa)
There isn’t an algorithm, so I guess we need to self filter and manage a good sub list.
At first glance I’m guessing, use the “all” feed. Block communities that are irrelevant, sub to interests and leave the undecided ones alone. Repeat on different sort options, Repeat for specific hosts.
What are your tricks for finding interesting content and building a sub list.
https://browse.feddit.de/ to find new groups to follow. My default view is set to communities that I subscribe to, sorted by new comments (though I will likely change that to new as growth continues).
After I’ve been through the stuff I subscribe to, I have a look at everything else
What if you don’t speak or read German?
@GuyDudeman Time to get learning then ;)
I suppose so!
Haha yeah!
I’m just kidding.
I sorted by “all” “new comments” for a while before I had a subscribed feed I cared for.
You’ll get some redundancy in overlapping communities from different instances, but you can just subscribe to one of those and browse subscribed.
I kind of wish communities had a “subscribe to remote community” button, but I understand that browsers would probably have to do some light tracking with cookies to make that possible.
If you go to the Communities tab and hit “All”, you can see a list of communities you can subscribe to based on what your instance has federated with. Then you just hit the “subscribe” button and you’re good to go.
Yes, thanks, I am aware you can check out an external community from a local view. I’m just kind of venting that you can’t do it from the other way around from a user experience standpoint (See community linked on the internet -> check out the content on-page -> tell that page you’d like to hear more from it on your home instance), even though I’m aware it would probably be very hard or annoying to pull off as your browser would have to be somehow aware of your logged-on instances in a way other instances are also built to support.
If you want to follow a community from another instance, just paste the URL into the search bar. Also works for specific posts or comments that you want to reply to.
Isn’t that what Graze does for Mastodon? Allows you to interact with remote accounts and posts without logging in each time. I imagine Lemmy would need something similar

for shilling or help finding sublemmies
Repeat for specific hosts.
also don’t be afraid to do the same for specific users: if you see the same user in more than one of your communities, good chance they’re in some other communities up your alley too. i don’t think you can usually view another person’s subscriptions, but you can at least find adjacent communities they’ve posted in by viewing their profile.
You can use a list. I created one a few months back. Some communities might not be active anymore. Will be adding more to this soon.
